Hokie Hiccups is an event acknowledging and celebrating the struggles or hiccups we’ve all experienced in our lives. It’s an opportunity for Hokies to share their growth experiences through different expressive arts and creative mediums. This year, the theme for the event is "It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me!" Join Hokie Wellness to celebrate Hokie Hiccups and connect with others as we come together to destigmatize mental health in a supportive, inviting environment. In addition to our main event, there will be tabling, food, and a lot of free giveaways including raffle prizes all night long.     We are delighted to announce that retired U.S. Army Col. Craig J. Alia, deputy commandant of 1st Battalion, has accepted the offer to continue his service to the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets in the role of vice commandant. The vice commandant is the principal advisor to the commandant who is authorized to provide directives and guidance in the commandant’s absence and responsible for day-to-day leadership and direction of the commandant’s staff, particularly regarding Corps operations. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, Col. Alia has achieved a distinguished career of service in the U.S. Army as a company commander with the 82nd Airborne Division, battalion commander with the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division, and brigade commander with the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), along with numerous additional staff and leadership assignments. Col. Alia’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star (four awards), the Air Medal (three awards, including Valor), the Combat Action Badge, the Senior Aviator Badge, and the Senior Parachutist Badge. In addition to his Bachelor of Science degree in political science from the U.S. Military Academy, Col. Alia holds an Master of Arts in Education from the University of St. Mary, a Master of Military Arts and Science in Theater Operations from the School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Liberty University. Col. Alia will officially begin his duties as vice commandant immediately. To ensure continuity of operations within the 1st Battalion, Col. Alia will concurrently serve as deputy commandant until his successor has been identified. Many thanks are owed to the vice commandant search committee for their hours of service in screening and interviewing the many outstanding candidates who were considered for this position.
