  • “Young people are more intelligent and creative than they are given credit for. They see possibilities for transformation that others do not.” – Angela Davis At Students Rising Above, we see this truth in action every day. The students we serve—many of whom face systemic barriers—are visionaries, changemakers, and leaders in the making. They redefine what success looks like, not just for themselves, but for their families and communities. Black History Month is a time to honor the generations of Black leaders who have shaped history and to uplift the young people who are shaping our future. By investing in education, mentorship, and opportunity, we help ensure that their creativity, intelligence, and potential are recognized and supported. This month and every month, we remain committed to empowering students to rise above barriers and create a world that reflects their brilliance. Want to get involved? Fiat Lux Scholar @ UC Berkeley Haas '28 | Dell Scholar

As my first semester ends and we welcome 2025, I’m filled with gratitude for 2024. It’s been a true blessing, and I wouldn’t hesitate to relive it again. For those who don’t know me, I’m Cindy. I come from a family of asylum seekers who fled the Vietnam War and grew up in Section 8 housing. I’ve witnessed gang violence that deeply impacted me, but it also created my drive. At the start of 2024, I applied to 40 colleges. While awaiting responses, I received:? ?? Cen-Cal WESTOP Peggy J. Whitehead Scholarship ??Vietnamese Professional Women of Silicon Valley Scholarship ??National QuestBridge Finalist Award ??National Dell Scholars Program ? Where I joined a select group nationwide of scholars that were accepted to top colleges with scholarships, mentorship, and etc. During this time, the game development group I worked for became the third highest in sales on Roblox, surpassing 11 million. In April, I chose University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business, the 2nd best undergraduate business program, as a Fiat Lux Scholar—one of the highest honors given to Berkeley freshmen. After graduating, I participated in Berkeley’s Summer Bridge program where I took classes and made lifelong friends that inspired me with their brilliance. It was one the best experiences. When August came, my first semester began. I kicked off my first week on an all paid trip to Lake Tahoe with the class of 28’ M.E.T and Spieker students, where I made friendships that will last a lifetime. Through those friendships, we became a team in Haas competitions, consistently placing second as freshmen in the EGAL X WIB D.E.I. Case Competition and the HBSA Innovation Challenge. Additionally, I became an Associate of D.E.I in the Associated Students of the University of California under President Shri and the Haas Business Student Association (HBSA). There, I began Berkeley’s first Title IX toolkit, organized Haas’s Multicultural Coffee Chat, started a mentorship program, and appeared on HBSA’s Humans of Haas video series. I also joined the Cal Women’s Rugby Team, where I played at Stanford’s Rookies Division 1 Pacific Mountain Tournament. As 2025 approached, I competed in Miss Vietnam Norcal, an experience that helped me grow into a better version of myself. Lastly, through the Cal Shadow Program, I flew to NYC to shadow Elizabeth Moore, Director of Marketing and Communications at Fordham Law School. This opportunity showed me where I truly want to be in the future, and I’m deeply grateful to Elizabeth and her colleagues for their insights, which shaped my vision of the person I aspire to become. Thank you to Students Rising Above, YBHS CAPs Office, and EVC TRIO, Upward Bound Program. As someone who couldn't turn to their parents for support, you truly made me feel seen and valued. I’m forever grateful for the investment you made in me. Your support reminds me of the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child," and I’m truly grateful to have had you in mine.
