Softening the impact of bereavement in universities through grief education and support.

关于我们

The Student Grief Network (part of Kaplan International) aims to soften the impact of bereavement in universities across the UK by raising awareness and creating a range of avenues for education and support. SGN is a student-founded organisation, informed by real lived experiences of bereavement. We know how difficult it can be to go through grief at university, but we also believe that we can work towards a healthier culture, building confidence in having those difficult conversations and creating sustainable and effective support systems. We specialise in training, consultancy, workshops and events. If you work in Higher Education and want to do more to support students and staff, we'd love to chat. You can email us at [email protected]

As we near the end of October, I wanted to reflect on how it can feel to start university, or go into a new term, when you've experienced a significant loss. Students might be feeling overwhelmed, lonely, distracted, miserable, excited, confused... In other words, every possible emoji all at once... ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? Grief is different for everyone, but we can consider some of the tensions bereaved students might be juggling right now: Do they tell new flatmates what has happened, or avoid those awkward conversations? Do they ask for support from the university or just get on with it? Is this a chance to start afresh, or do they feel guilty for being away from home? Do they drag themselves out for a social when all they want to do is stay in bed? Is it a good idea to drink ten pints or will it end in tears? And the question underlying all of this: How do we balance new beginnings while giving our grief the time and space that it needs? We don't have to have all the answers, but we can show students they're not alone and give them space to explore how they're feeling and what they need to get through the hard days ??

I came across this article a few weeks ago, and it's really stuck with me. Moya Sarner articulates how the job of those working in the grief space is not to 'take away' people's pain, but to 'help them feel it'. That the problem is not so much the grief, but when grief gets pushed down and shut out. That's when we get stuck, when we feel disconnected, when we get ill. In her own words: "I was so preoccupied with trying to hold everything together, I lost touch with my own need to fall apart [...] It might be a person, a relationship or a dream that has died, but if we scroll or drug or literally run away from our feelings, the result is the same: we’re trapped. Without loss, without grief, there can be no growth." So instead of asking, how do I get rid of this feeling? Can you get curious about grief, look it in the eye, let yourself feel it? Not because we want to be consumed by the pain, but so that it lessens it's hold on us, so that we can grow through it. (It feels important to acknowledge that sometimes we're not ready, or don't have the support or resources to approach grief in a way that feels safe and manageable. Be curious, but don't force it. You're not failing if you're not able to face it, this stuff is hard.)

Grief is horrible – but it’s supposed to be. We have to feel a loss before we can grow through it

I'm excited to share that The Student Grief Network (SGN) is now part of Kaplan International, and I have joined the team as Executive Head of Kaplan International Grief Programmes ?? Very grateful to be working with such a dynamic organisation to continue growing SGN and expand the reach of our training, consultancy and support programmes. Our hope is to build better-informed and more compassionate approaches to bereavement, grief, trauma and wellbeing across Higher Education and improve the support that students and staff receive in vulnerable moments. Huge thanks to Dr Victoria Wilson-Crane, Kate Mishcon, Joe Farnell, Linda Cowan and all the other colleagues I’ve been working with across Kaplan International Pathways for making this such a wonderful first few months.? More soon, but for now, thanks to The PIE for this Movers and Shakers feature last week ?

I’ve just read the latest government report on student mental health, which highlights the need for more comprehensive wellbeing strategies and investment in effective services. I’m aware of some fantastic wellbeing initiatives in universities across the country, but I also know that more can be done to protect and support students in vulnerable moments. I thought I’d summarise some findings that particularly struck me: - The number of students declaring a mental health condition increased sevenfold in the previous decade (The Higher Education Statistics Agency, 2022) with 36% of students reporting poor mental wellbeing (The Being Well, Doing Well survey for Student Minds and Alterline, 2022). -??A 2023 survey with 4000 students found just 12% think their university handles the issue of mental health well (The Tab & Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM)) -? Factors that contribute to students having poor mental health include moving away from home, academic and financial pressures, and the absence of familiar support networks (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2020). -??The consequences of mental health issues for students range from poor academic performance, employment outcomes, and dropping out of university, to self-harm and suicide. -? Certain groups are more likely to experience mental health issues and are at a higher risk of suicide, including those who have experienced bereavement (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2020). -??Current models of mental health provision within universities tend to involve three services: wellbeing services to deliver low-intensity support; counselling services for students with moderate mental distress; disability services for students with a diagnosed mental illness. "In breaking our hearts, it can open us up" A little surreal finding this poem I wrote at the beginning of The Student Grief Network journey. It still somehow captures the essence of my work and my understanding of grief with all its layers, both dark and light. Grief doesn’t stop when the funeral ends. In a new blog for The Student Grief Network I talk about the misconception that the ‘closure’ a funeral offers us is the same as ‘closing’ off our grief. Funerals (or other rituals and memorial services) can give us a chance to publicly mourn, to share memories and say goodbye, and to feel the reality of our loss. This can be an important part of grieving, but it does not mean that we are suddenly 'fixed'. The cards and texts stop coming, the flowers die, and everyone else returns to 'normal' life. But for those closest to the person who has died, this is when the real grieving begins, and where support is needed just as much as those early days.
