关于我们
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Our program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks and community green spaces at various locations across the country. After working with the SCA, our members emerge with increased environmental awareness, social responsibility and leadership skills. As America’s most effective youth conservation service organization, the SCA transforms lives by empowering young people of all backgrounds to plan, act, and lead while they protect and restore our natural and cultural resources. Founded in 1957, the SCA is dedicated to building the next generation of conservation leaders while inspiring lifelong protection of the environment and our communities. SCA's mission is to build the next generation of conservation leaders and inspire lifelong stewardship of our environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land.

"Cities thrive when trees are part of their story." —Lidia Soto-Harmon, SCA President and CEO Last week, the SCA Bay Area Urban Green program partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation, Amazon and Hayward Area Recreation and Park District to plant and give away trees at Bidwell Park in Hayward, California. The event drew over 50 volunteers, who removed 65 cubic feet of debris, planted 25 ???? and gave out 20 ???? to area residents. They planted Pacific Wax Myrtles, Black Lace elderberries, Western sycamores, holly leaf cherries and 6 island oaks. “Trees clean our air, cool our cities and improve the lives of the people around them," said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "We’re happy to help the Student Conservation Association and Hayward Area Recreation and Park District maximize the impact of their urban canopy and inspire more people to engage with nature in a meaningful way.” Through its Urban Green Program, the SCA provides young people with paid green jobs, including single-day service projects, seasonal work and year-long internships or fellowships. Since the 1970s, Bay Area program participants have planted trees, built trails and restored habitats while exploring green job opportunities, building leadership skills, and learning about the local environment through environmental education field trips, outdoor recreation and conservation projects. March 8 is #InternationalWomensDay. While there are many incredible women working in conservation, here at the SCA, one stands out. Liz Putnam founded the SCA in 1957 while in her senior year at Vassar College. Her pioneering idea to put young people to work for the planet produced generations of conservation leaders and launched a movement that predates the Peace Corps, the Environmental Protection Agency and even Earth Day. Liz's can-do spirit and unshakable belief in the power of teamwork continue to ground the SCA's mission and drive us forward. "Extreme heat can age you as fast as a smoking habit," reports Grist. "Extreme heat is particularly dangerous for people who live in urban areas with patchy tree cover and lots of concrete. These zones are called urban heat islands, and they can get up to 7 degrees F hotter than surrounding rural areas." https://lnkd.in/gWfYW97W Learn how the SCA's Houston Urban Green program is working in partnership with the HARC | Houston Advanced Research Center to increase the city's tree canopy coverage through our ForUsTree Initiative. https://lnkd.in/gBTE_GwX #AtWorkForThePlanet #ConservationBeginsHere #JoinTheCrew

“I’ve been in SCA for five seasons and each season has helped shape me into the person I am today. I was originally reluctant to join because I never saw myself as an outdoors person, but I’m glad I ignored my doubts because my experience has led to significant personal growth." - Perri Williams, 18, 2024 Atlanta UPS Summer Crew On this final day of #BlackHistoryMonth, we lift up the voices of young Black women who give back to their communities and invest in themselves while #AtWorkForThePlanet. In August, members of our Houston Urban Green crew participated in gathering data for the HARC | Houston Advanced Research Center's comprehensive Houston Harris Heat Action Team H3AT Mapping Campaign. On a hot summer day, heat measurements were taken in neighborhoods all across the city at three separate times. This data collection aimed to put together a city heat map to help urban planners better understand and mitigate the impacts of heat on public health and infrastructure.
