Beyond the Classroom Series: Exploring Careers in Healthcare (March 1, 2025) Meet the Panelist: Dr. Derrick Payne - DERRICK D PAYNE, DDS Derrick D. Payne is a fellow Memphian who was raised by his Mom (Patricia English), Grandmom (Carrie Benson) and Dad (Gregory Payne). He's a former student-athlete of Hamilton High School and attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville on a football scholarship and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1993. After graduating from Vanderbilt, he attended the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry at Memphis where he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 2000. In 2000-2002, Dr. Payne completed a two year General Practice Residency at the University Of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville where he served as Chief Resident during 2001-2002 year. In July 2002, Dr. Payne purchased his first dental practice in Memphis and has practiced in the Whitehaven Community for 20 years. He is a member of the Shelby County Dental Society, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc and the visionary of Men of Memphis UNITED. Dr. Payne is an dedicated member of New Direction Christian Church and founder of the Alex L. Turner Scholarship Foundation. He is also Co-Author of the Motivational Book "40 Days of Direction: Life Lessons From The Talented Ten" along with his Vanderbilt Football Teammates. He also is passionate about bringing individuals together in the form of UNITY through various community events and functions. One of his largest annual events is entitled THE JINGLE JAM in which thousands of Memphians and surrounding citizens come together to celebrate the Christmas Holidays. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family, friends, and mentoring many of the country’s youth. Dr. Payne is happily married to Darcus E. Payne (19 Years) and together they have 3 beautiful daughters: Dericka McKenzie Payne (age 19), Demi Alexandria Payne (age 15) and a Fur Baby Poodle, Dior Payne (age 1). She graduated from Bolivar Central High School as the first black valedictorian in 30 years. She went on to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. During her time in Knoxville, she published an article in “ Pursuit,” the Journal of Undergraduate Research, and earned her bachelor's Degree in Microbiology. Jasity continued her studies at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, where she received her Masters in Clinical Lab Sciences. Jasity has worked in various roles in the laboratory setting. She is currently a Medical Technologist at Vitalant, where she works in the blood bank laboratory.
