The adaptive reuse of Horton Plaza in San Diego, California is a tangible and well-executed case study into the astronomical embodied carbon reductions that may be realized through #BuildingReuse. The structural engineer on this project was Miyamoto International and the sustainability consultant was Atelier Ten. The majority of the superstructure and substructure was reused and through this reuse of these primary building elements, the design demonstrated a 73% decrease in embodied carbon when compared to a baseline new build. Have questions about CalGreen Embodied Carbon Requirements? Reach out to the Sustainable Design Committee at [email protected]. #TechnicalTuesdays

Out of the three pathways to compliance with the new CALGreen Embodied Carbon requirements, #BuildingReuse can offer both significant savings in embodied carbon as well as excavation and demolition. The square footage threshold for non-residential buildings is 100,000 sq ft but there are various scenarios within this pathway to meet that scenario. The examples below are from the 2022 CALGreen Supplement Update Guide (https://lnkd.in/gvmUvWvi), which details one condition that meets compliance requirements and another that does not. Do you have questions about today’s #TechnicalTuesdays tip? Contact the Sustainable Design Committee at [email protected].
