"Be honest and transparent," we said to each other. "This will only make us better." Anyone working in a #hospital has experienced the heightened anticipation of an inspection. We know it is (or should be) a constructive, educational experience that results in a safer environment for #healthcareworkers and better outcomes for patients. In our area, the regulator is often the Kansas Department of Health and Environment or the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The Joint Commission accredits Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System. Hospitals ready themselves for a "J-CO" survey by reviewing standards, mock surveys, ensuring staff alignment, and checking documentation. Our approach has included a few learning expeditions to high-performing #healthsystems like Mary Greeley Medical Center, whose #leaders have graciously allowed us copy them. Our team became stronger as we prepared; we knew our day was coming. "We're ready," Kimberly Jarrell, and Julie Moore would say. They knew we weren't perfect, but we were disciplined. Our growing sense of healthy pride came through our commitment to "make health and healing available to all." They arrived on Tuesday morning. "Surprise," they joked in the opening conference. A few of us chuckled, knowing the work that was coming. Led by Lori Pauls, our team quickly erected a command center full of work stations. The room was full of chatter, laughter, some deep breathing, and plenty of caffeine and catered food. Our frontline team labored away as our census during the time of this survey was as high as it has been since #COVID19. Every bed was full all week. Still our team managed to simultaneously navigate staff shortages due to illness, avoid diversion, and respond to surveyor requests for information. It was eustress, not distress. We - and our surveyors - knew we had nothing to hide. (Their respectfulness was noted.) Part of our confidence came from the people who helped us get here. Organizational assessments from Wade Gallon, Lindsay Swain Hunt, Eric Shell, and Opal (Hammer) Greenway with Stroudwater Associates . Meticulous guidance around finance, data, and #processimprovement from Judson Howe. Rev. cycle help from TruBridge. Strategy support from Charlie Grimwood. Governance coaching from Todd Linden. They believed in us. Tonight, these folks celebrated the VICTORY of a report with 18 deficiencies that ranged from outdated policies and process breakdowns to the need for new smoke detectors in seldom-used spaces. We're not perfect, but we're steadily improving through the deployment of Baldrige Foundation principles. Knowing us, each of these issues will be corrected within 30 days. There is something freeing about looking in the mirror, acknowledging our imperfections while pursuing health, and still genuinely loving what we see. That's us, and our confidence is growing. Next stop: GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on March 28, where we'll take in the winning culture of the Kansas City Chiefs.
