Yesterday Stroud Water Research Center was proud to host a working meeting of the Brandywine River Flood Study Advisory Committee. As a partner in this important project, the Stroud Center is contributing expertise in hydrology, river dynamics, and computer simulation modeling to recommend ways to reduce the threats of future flooding in downstream communities, such as Wilmington, DE. We are thrilled to announce that we have received a generous $35,000 grant from the Foxwynd Foundation to enhance our research on watershed restoration efforts. This funding will enable us to gather critical environmental data that will inform effective investments in water quality. This research focuses on the impact of restoration practices, including streamside forest plantings and sustainable farming techniques, on freshwater ecosystems. By collecting robust datasets on various parameters — ranging from nutrient runoff to biodiversity — we aim to ensure that restoration efforts yield meaningful, long-term improvements in water quality and ecosystem health. As Dr. David B. Did you know it takes only 1 cup of road salt to permanently pollute 184 gallons of freshwater? Road salt is a real problem in our waterways. Many streams remain salty year-round due to groundwater contamination. ?? Remove snow and ice. Consider shovels, brooms, and even leaf blowers depending on the snowfall. ?? Use only what you need, where you need it. A coffee mug full treats 10 standard sidewalk tiles. ?? Pay attention to the weather. Road salt isn't effective under 15F. ?? Pick it up.
