Ending malnutrition can be the great unlock to health and a fair chance at prosperity for everyone. The solutions exist. $13 billion a year would save millions of lives and return nearly $300 billion in benefits to society. $13 billion. It is a significant sum, but not unimaginable. It must be possible to build a well nourished world together, because the benefits are truly for everyone. When we are well nourished, we are stronger - we grow, we learn, we thrive. I applaud the incredible work of the Gates Foundation, and the many other inspiring philanthropies in our network announcing commitments this week at the Nutrition for Growth Summit. We can’t meet our goal of reducing preventable maternal and child deaths unless we prioritize nutrition. Malnutrition is an underlying cause of nearly half of all child deaths, one-third of all newborn deaths, and one out of five maternal deaths.?It also makes children up to 15 times more likely to die from pneumonia and eight times more likely to die from diarrhea. While these facts are stark, they also suggest a powerful reality. If we address malnutrition, we can address other health goals.? Solving malnutrition means fewer people experiencing poverty. It means higher immunization rates. And it means fewer fatalities from diseases like malaria and pneumonia. It also means thriving economies, as undernutrition stunts physical and cognitive abilities, leading to significant productivity loss. Anita Zaidi, Gates Foundation President, Gender Equality Division, reinforced our commitment to addressing malnutrition at this year’s Nutrition for Growth summit in Paris. Over the next four years, we will continue working with partners to expand access to better prenatal vitamins, provide financing to government-led efforts through the Child Nutrition Fund, expand access to safe, nutritious, and affordable diets year-round, and unlock new ways of using food fortification to reduce micronutrient deficiencies. By investing in nutrition, we can change the trajectory of communities around the world. #N4GParis

Stronger Foundations for Nutrition and the OECD Network of Foundations Working for Development last night co-hosted the ‘#NourishtheGoals’ high-level event at #N4GParis, at which more than $2 billion in new philanthropic commitments for nutrition were announced. These investments will scale critical child nutrition interventions, expand access to nourishing school meals, scale up maternal nutrition solutions like multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS), and strengthen food systems in the face of rising global challenges. More than $2 billion in new philanthropic commitments for nutrition were announced last evening at #N4GParis. These are pivotal for global health and development.
