As additive manufacturing (AM) moves into high-stakes applications such as aerospace and pipelines, understanding the performance and durability of AM components in extreme environments is essential. Check out this full-scale evaluation on an AM Alloy 625 component testing its resilience under harsh demands conducted by Stress Engineering Services, Inc. The results highlighted performance strengths and areas for improvement, offering valuable insights for AM applications in aerospace and pipeline industries. Our comprehensive study included: ?? At the forefront of technological innovation in power plant maintenance, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has published a groundbreaking study titled "Torsional Vibration Monitoring: A Health Monitoring Strategy for Wear in Deep Draft Vertical Pumps". Ryan Williams and Gyorgy Szasz from Stress Engineering Services served as principal investigators and co-contributors of this study that explores the advanced capabilities of Torsional Vibration Monitoring (TVM) technology. The study addresses critical challenges in monitoring the condition of deep draft vertical pumps (DDVPs) used in power plants. It dives into how TVM can provide early insights into wear and impending failures in DDVPs—issues often undetectable by conventional methods. TVM technology, paired with advanced signal processing, enables us to capture unique torque signatures associated with wear in otherwise inaccessible pump areas, like shaft bearings and impeller wear rings. Key Findings: ? Enhanced Detection: The analog torsional vibration sensor (ATVS) demonstrated an ability to detect subtle changes that traditional sensors miss, indicating wear locations with greater precision. ? Predictive Potential: Using multi-linear regression analysis on torsional data, the study successfully predicted runtime for a nuclear power plant’s circulating water pump—an encouraging step towards enhanced predictive maintenance. Why This Matters: With DDVPs playing a critical role in power generation, unplanned maintenance can be costly and disruptive. By deploying TVM, power plants can anticipate and address issues before significant damage occurs, minimizing downtime and preserving generating capacity. This research underscores the value of innovative monitoring in extending equipment life and improving power plant reliability.
