The Athletic Shoulder (ASH) test is employed for evaluating and tracking the isometric strength of athletes' shoulders during the recovery process or to monitor performance. Introduced by Ashworth et al. in 2018, this innovative test specifically assesses the neuromuscular activity of the shoulder girdle, focusing on athletes engaged in contact sports and activities involving overhead movements. Want to learn more about how you can use the ASH test or smart force plates like AxIT Stomp-IT with the people you work with? Measuring ground contact time on a drop jump or drop hop test using force plates like AxIT Stomp-IT is crucial for assessing the performance of running athletes as it provides valuable insights into their neuromuscular control and efficiency during explosive movements. Shorter ground contact times typically indicate rapid force production and better power-to-weight ratios, both essential for sprinting. Efficient energy transfer and minimal ground contact times are paramount for running speed and agility. Typically endurance athletes don't have the same reactive capacity as sprinters however useful baselines can still be used to gauge their performance. By tracking ground contact times in these tests, coaches and sports scientists can pinpoint weaknesses, optimize training regimens, and enhance athletes' capacity to generate explosive power, ultimately improving their running performance and competitive edge. Lower limb power is one of the first muscle qualities people tend to lose as they age due to several interconnected factors: Sarcopenia: Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength. As people age, there is a natural decline in muscle mass, and this process tends to start in the 30s or 40s. With reduced muscle mass, the capacity to generate power diminishes, particularly in the lower limbs, which are responsible for activities like walking, running, and jumping.Muscle fiber composition: There are two main types of muscle fibers: slow-twitch (Type I) and fast-twitch (Type II). Slow-twitch fibers are more resistant to fatigue and are primarily responsible for endurance activities, while fast-twitch fibers generate force quickly and are involved in power and strength activities. As people age, they tend to experience a shift from fast-twitch to slow-twitch muscle fiber composition, leading to decreased lower limb power.Neural changes: The connection between the nervous system and muscles, known as neuromuscular function, plays a vital role in generating power. As people age, there are changes in neural function that can affect the recruitment and synchronization of muscle fibers, leading to a decline in power production.Connective tissue changes: Age-related changes in tendons and other connective tissues can also affect the force transmission from muscles to bones, leading to reduced power generation. It may seem counterintuitive but a Counter Movement Jump assessment may be a valid assessment in aging clients to assess their lower limb power and decline in function in fit and healthy individuals who are safe to do so. Research by Lichtenstein et al 2013 did exactly this finding that both male's and females' lower limb power as measured by a counter movement jump declined with age at a similar linear rate reducing by approximately 40% from the ages of 20 to 80+ years of age. This test could prove a useful option when monitoring fit and health individuals' health span ranking and preemptively addressing deficiencies. #jump #cmj #healthspan #longevity

Guess what. Virtually every upper-body exercise or movement involves your shoulder muscles to some extent so identifying whether your client has adequete shoulder strength for the activities they want to do is critical to helping them achieve their goals. How do you measure shoulder strength? For too long this has been done with overly simple and unreliable manual muscles testing. Is this shoulder a 3 or a 4....maybe they are a 2.... With AxIT you can bring your assessment into the 21st century using the latest technology desgined for the everyday health and fitness professional to set strength baselines, identify weaknesses and track progression over time. Stop guessing and start measuring with your shoulder assessment. Go to www.strengthbynumbers.com to learn more. #rotatorcuff #shoulderstrength #shoulderabduction #physio #physiotherapy
