Thanks New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez for helping Street Lab wrap up our 2024 residency at a new Open Street on Audubon Ave in Washington Heights. We painted a street mural designed by artist Mildor Chevalier based on ideas gathered from community members. Lots more photos here: https://lnkd.in/gqWJUbHA

Street Lab works with NYC communities to activate public space. Pop-up that brings New Yorkers together. 501c3 nonprofit
关于我们
Street Lab is a 501c3 nonprofit that creates programs for public space across New York City—pop-up reading rooms, open-air drawing studios, and more. Our passion is bringing people together and transforming public space, and we do this in order to strengthen neighborhoods and improve the urban environment, with a focus on underserved locations. We also send kits around the world so that other cities can do the same. (Formerly known as the Uni Project.)

Street Lab sticks with our community partners over the long haul, helping bring their vision for neighborhood public spaces to life. Here’s the story of our 10-year partnership with Lonnie Hardy and Caldwell Enrichment Programs on Jennings St in the Bronx, which has included pop-up reading rooms, pick-up basketball games, and even a visit from the New York Yankees...?https://lnkd.in/eruGTfXq

The Placemakers of Hunter College Club, with the support of?Street Lab, engaged in a tactical urbanism exercise to imagine what a more people-friendly 68th Street could look like for Hunter College students and residents of the surrounding neighborhood.?These young planners, part of our Master of Urban Planning program, look forward to conversations with the community, upcoming panels, repurposing streets, and advocating for high-quality public spaces.? #tacticalurbanism #huntercollege #publicspace #placemaking

It is a great time for placemaking and fun in Downtown Jamaica! A couple of weeks ago, we hosted our first Trick-or-Streets Halloween event in partnership with New York City Department of Transportation and Street Lab! We reclaimed the 165th St Mall pedestrian space from vehicles and had a truly spooktacular event with great weather, donuts, cider, hot cocoa, treats, bubbles, music, arts and crafts, mobile library, photo booth, and live dancing that were enjoyed by all! ??? ? #downtownjamaica #jamaicaqueensny #jamaicany #halloween #trickorstreets #streetlab

Street Lab works with NYC public schools to transform streets right outside the school doors into car-free pedestrian spaces that support the health, safety, and happiness of kids, families, and the whole neighborhood. Here’s the story of just one of the schools we worked with in 2024—see how Street Lab and PS 28 launched a New York City Department of Transportation Open St on Mt Hope Place in the Bronx that is taking off (and lowering absentee rates too!): https://lnkd.in/e2ZTCzuf

This weekend, I had the chance to help out at an amazing pop-up event curated by Street Lab in collaboration with Pineapple Ride (a super cool Brooklyn-based cycling club with beautiful T-shirt merch designs), held in Gravesend, Brooklyn. StreetLab is doing incredible work by transforming everyday public spaces into places where we can connect, create, and learn together. At the event, we made chalk art, shared stories, made new friends, and explored creative ways to support and reimagine our community spaces. Living in New York, we share our surroundings so closely every day, and that’s part of what makes this city so special. This weekend reminded me just how important those shared environments are—and how they can surprise us with what they become when we come together. The event left a lasting impact on me, and I wanted to share how meaningful it was and how important it is to engage with and connect to the community around us. Keep an eye out for the next StreetLab pop-up in your neighborhood, you definitely won’t want to miss it!

This summer, 30 teen NYCHA residents received Street Lab kits to help them create pop-ups that are transforming public spaces at NYCHA housing into places of community, creativity, and healing. We started with planning sessions at our warehouse, followed by pop-ups led entirely by the youth in four locations this fall, with more to come. Made possible with support from Center for Justice Innovation’s Neighborhood Safety Initiatives. The teens are part of the Youth Leadership Council. For more photos: https://lnkd.in/eqw4bmpR

This fall, the South Korean nonprofit domansa brought Street Lab pop-ups to the streets of Seoul as part of a long-term vision of founder Heidi Cho to transform public space in her city. Domansa rolled out Street Lab PLAY and IMAGINE kits on six dates in the Seongsu neighborhood, a former industrial area, with the support of the district government. Each year, Street Lab makes kits for other cities, sharing what we’ve learned on streets of New York. More photos on our website! https://lnkd.in/eCe5hC9V Photo credit: domansa

Over the past decade, every one of Street Lab's 2500+ pop-ups in NYC has been at the request of a local partner. Here’s the story of just one of those 285+ community relationships—read about how we’re working with Decatur Block Association to create a new New York City Department of Transportation Open Street and bring their vision for the neighborhood to life: https://lnkd.in/euRa2mAV
