If you are interested in addressing financial resource needs within medical settings, read this new literature review from Children's HealthWatch: https://lnkd.in/e-8EzbTB. Their findings reaffirm what we at StreetCred observe every single day in clinic: embedding financial resources into medical care enables families to access the services they need. H2HC was thrilled to welcome 2024 Prizes for Innovation winners, StreetCred and The Giving Grove, to our growing learning community at the 2024 Fall Summit on November 21.
StreetCred had the absolute best time ever at the Hunger to Health Collaboratory (H2HC) 2024 Fall Summit yesterday! Our entire StreetCred team loved learning from The Giving Grove, DC Central Kitchen, Green Bronx Machine/Stephen Ritz, Alameda County Recipe4Health, Worcester Community Action Council, Inc., Action for Boston Community Development, Inc., COMMUNITY ACTION PIONEER VALLEY, The Aspen Institute, and so many more luminaries in the anti-hunger space. A huge highlight of the day was, of course, watching our fabulous Medical Director, Rachel Sagor, MD, accept H2HC's 2024 Prize in Innovation. Congratulations to our fellow Prize for Innovation recipient, The Giving Grove! You all are so deserving, and we can't wait to see what you'll do next year and beyond! #H2HC2024FallSummit

It was so inspiring to be part of Hunger to Health Collaboratory (H2HC)'s fall summit last week, learning from amazing nonprofits like DC Central Kitchen, Green Bronx Machine, and Alameda County Recipe 4 Health, as well as visionary leaders from foundations and the for profit sector, including Nishant Roy at Chobani, Gordon Reid from Stop & Shop, Cecilia McKenney at Quest Diagnostics and Emily Yu from Newman's Own Foundation. And coming home with a 2024 Prize for Innovation - an honor The Giving Grove shared with some incredible changemakers at Boston Medical Center's StreetCred program - was the cherry on top. Thank you to Nicolene Hengen, MSPH, Richard MacMillan, Samantha L. and their colleagues at H2HC for a fantastic convening and the opportunity to celebrate all those who make The Giving Grove's work possible.

I had the opportunity to visit Boston Medical Center (BMC) earlier this month. More than 20 years ago, BMC began its first “food as medicine” program. Patients identified as having food insecurity receive a food “prescription,” meaning they could visit a?food pantry?run by the hospital once every two weeks and receive boxes customized for their medical conditions. The food is enough to feed them — and their families — until their next visit. The program serves about 6,800 patients, distributing?50,000 pounds?of food a month. Every time patients pick up food, staff members add a note in their medical chart so that clinicians can see that they are accessing “food as medicine” therapy. I was amazed to learn the source of much of the fresh produce: The hospital itself. That’s right — BMC operates its?own rooftop farm. 70% of the vegetables grown there go to Preventive Food Pantry participants. A portion of the rest is served in the hospital cafeteria and to hospitalized patients, who are told that the food was grown right above them. One of the co-founders, David Maffeo, told me that the value of produce yielded on the rooftop farm every year is about $26,000, but the green roof itself saves the hospital money. “It extends the life of the roof in wintertime and keeps the building warmer,” he said. In the summer, it keeps the building cooler and saves energy. “That was part of our thinking — it was first and foremost for the pantry and patients and to inspire the community, but also it’s good for the environment.” Health-care leaders from around the world have visited BMC to learn about its “food as medicine” and sustainability efforts. Some have replicated the Preventive Food Pantry, although Maffeo says he is unaware of any other hospital that has started its own rooftop farm. Here’s to hoping that will change. This month, StreetCred's Acting Director, Dr. Rachel Sagor, MD and Clinical Operations Manager, Sahar Choudhry, MPH,?attended Ascend at the Aspen Institute's ThinkXChange: The National Forum on #2Gen Approaches in Aspen, Colorado. They joined over 200 leaders in the two-generation field who gathered to discuss policies and practices that advance intergenerational family well-being. Over the course of four days, they explored breakthroughs and best practices to create better outcomes for children and the adults in their lives. Dr. Sagor also sat on a panel to discuss the growing movement to build prosperity in places where families gather, notably in hospital systems and pediatric services. Way to represent StreetCred at Boston Medical Center (BMC)!
