Quality Control is Everyone's Job. At STL, coming up with innovative cooling solutions is only part of our job. Innovation is nothing without quality. Yesterday, we welcomed the supplier quality engineering team from our partners at Enplas from Japan into our liquid factory in Georgetown, TX to perform our first quality audit (more commonly known as the factory colonoscopy to those who haven't had the pleasure). I am extremely pleased by how our entire team performed under the microscope and very grateful for the Enplas teaming flying all the way here from Japan to perform the audit! Let's Go! #ExpertiseMatters #liquidcooling #thermalengineering #datacenter #ai

Don't get us wrong, we "like" 2-phase liquid cooling. We just don't "love" it. ?The fundamental thermodynamic principles keeping 2-phase liquid cooling from stealing the datacenter cooling performance show “boil” down to these two realities: ?1.) Saturation temperature of a 2-phase refrigerant must always be HIGHER than the Facility Water *Return* temperature in a 2-phase DLC cooling loop. Saturation Temperature of the fluid ≈ boiling temperature ≈ condensation temperature. The Facility Water leaving a 2-phase condenser (CDU) cannot be warmer than the condensation temperature of the refrigerant (see figure 1). This only becomes not true when using a vapor-compression cycle (i.e. compressor or chiller) because you are using mechanical energy to change the saturation condition of the working fluid - like a home air conditioner - not known for being light on energy consumption. ?2.) All mainstream refrigerants with boiling points above 0°C have higher total loop pumping power requirements than single phase water in an apples to apples heat rejection system. Vapor density is substantially lower than liquid density, mass flowrate is conserved, and pressure drop increases with velocity squared. Mechanical work (pumping power) is volumetric flowrate multiplied by pressure drop. (see figure 2) But don't take my word for it, ask a 2-phase liquid cooling solution provider. Just take a few steps back first so you don't get slapped by all the hand waving ?? #ExpertiseMatters #liquidcooling #datacenter #dlc #ai #strategicthermal

Are you buying mission-critical data center technology from a great engineering company that has a bit of marketing? Or are you buying critical technology from a great marketing company that has a bit of engineering? I think we have all had the pleasure of encountering the liquid cooling company CEO that couldn't spell CFD. Come talk to us at Strategic Thermal Labs; where there isn't a marketing expert or used car salesman anywhere in sight! #ExpertiseMatters PS: we are currently seeking professionals in the marketing and sales vocations. Please save us from ourselves ?? #liquidcooling #datacenter #ai #thermalengineering

What does “Best In Slot” (BiS) mean? It’s a question we are often asked. The term, itself, is derived from the gaming world (are you surprised that a company founded by overachieving engineers has played a video game or two? ?? ). Best in Slot is a reference to the most optimal solution for any unique application. ?Asking what is the best cold plate design is like asking “What is the most optimal mode of transportation?”. Are you single and live 0.5 miles from your office downtown? Maybe a bicycle. Do you have 5 kids under the age of 10? Maybe it’s a minivan. Does your job require you to routinely move 30,000lb equipment loads? Perhaps a dually truck is right for you! It’s not always the same and it is entirely customer dependent. ?BiS is established through parametric optimization of the critical cost functions for each customer. Did you know that minimizing thermal resistance, maximizing coefficient of performance (COP), maximizing caloric efficiency (aka delta T), minimizing pressure drop, or simply minimizing price tag are all examples of competing cost functions in cold plate design? Is that because the liquid cooling company you currently shop doesn’t know that either? ?Let us help make sure you don’t drive home in a dually truck for that 0.5-mile commute to the downtown office or wind up trying to pull a 30,000lb excavator with your bike ?? www.strategicthermal.com #strategicthermal #liquidcooling #datacenter #ai #liquidgarage #biscoldplate

The Register recently did a great job of summarizing our #SC24 presentation "Ending the War on Water" If you didn't have a chance to catch the presentation in person or wanted a "cliff notes" version of it: https://lnkd.in/gcpFay2i Replacing water consumed in evaporative cooling always means increasing the electricity consumed in cooling for a given heat load. It consumes less electricity to replenish evaporated cooling water through desalination, water treatment, and long distance piping than it does to rely upon purely "dry" cooling technologies. We need to stop attacking evaporative cooling and start advocating for water treatment and distribution infrastructure to replenish the water consumed in data center cooling. TLDR (or watch) on the 2-Phase vs Single Phase Data Center Liquid Cooling Discussion: Where Single Phase Cooling with Water Wins: ?? Superior "component to facility" total heat transfer stack ?? Enables higher power processors for identical boundary conditions ?? Less total system pumping power for the same heat load ?? Higher facility energy efficiency ?? Safer for humans ?? Safer for the environment ?? Most abundant substance on Earth Where 2-Phase Cooling with refrigerants wins: ?? Won’t damage electronics during a leak ?? Nucleation phenomena (aka bubbles) are extremely entertaining to watch PS - Don't underestimate that last bullet point win for 2-Phase cooling. I've spent nearly two decades enjoying the hypnotic rhythm of processors boiling. #strategicthermallabs #datacenter #liquidcooling #ai https://lnkd.in/ggjmV-4m

We had a pretty good time diving into the "deep end" with a few liquid cooling forums at #SC24 a few weeks ago! If you missed any of the exciting sessions or if you were hoping to get a closer look at the slide content, we have uploaded videos of all 3 sessions to our new YouTube channel: Looking Beyond the CDU: https://lnkd.in/gUcDaPkj Ending the War on Water: https://lnkd.in/gRk6iNms An Objective Look at 2-Phase Cooling: https://lnkd.in/ggjmV-4m Please enjoy responsibly. #strategicthermallabs #datacenter #liquidcooling
