    ?? Meet the California Strategic Growth Council’s (SGC) Agricultural Land Equity Program Analyst, Caleb Swanson! In his role with the Task Force, Caleb assists with the administration and coordination of public meetings and supports the Task Force in drafting its policy recommendations, and research.?The Task Force is a 13-member body working to develop policy recommendations on how to #equitably increase #LandAccess for agriculture and traditional tribal agricultural uses throughout the state. ?? Prior to working at SGC, Caleb graduated from the University of South Dakota in the spring of 2024 with degrees in #sustainability and political science. While in college, he worked as an #Environmental Policy Analyst for Stateside Associates, and as a consultant at his university's writing center. He was also an environmental and agricultural legislative intern for United States Senator Tina Smith (MN), along with an environment and #energy policy intern for the national nonprofit Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future. He also held a position as an environmental policy intern for his hometown of Mitchell, South Dakota. ?     ??? Today youth from all across California are participating in the California Secretary of State’s?Student Mock #Election!? ? It is important to find ways to connect?and empower youth within policy making and the voter process! That is why our parent Office, Governor's Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation (LCI), supports the California Youth Empowerment Act (AB-46) with the Youth Empowerment Commission (YEC). Congratulations to our community partner and Community Resilience Centers (CRC) grant recipient, ?????????? ?????????????????? ??????????????, on the groundbreaking for their new ???????????? ?????? ????????, ?????????? & ?????????????????? in Santa Rosa County. ?????????? ?????????????????? ?????????????? broke ground on their center in southwest Santa Rosa and plans to create a neighborhood site that will advance health and social equity by addressing nutrition and food security needs of lower-income community members and responding to emergency food needs. A unique feature of the ???????????? ?????? ????????, ?????????? & ?????????????????? is in its name. The Center will have a special component that offers resources focused on engaging and empowering youth of the community. Offering internship programs and career pathways in partnership with local schools. The Center’s location was actually strategic, with proximity to six Santa Rosa County high schools. The California Strategic Growth Council’s CRC Program funds neighborhood-level resilience centers to provide shelter and resources during extreme climate events?(i.e. extrema heat, flooding, wind, fire, etc.) as well as year-round services and programming that strengthen community connections and ability to withstand disasters and other emergencies. CRC takes a holistic approach to building community #resilience by bringing together a comprehensive set of infrastructure upgrades, service delivery, and supportive programming that are developed and implemented in partnership with the community. ?????????? ?????????????????? ?????????????? expects the Center to open to the community sometime next year, stay tuned! #ClimateResilience #CaliforniaForAll

    ?? Thank you, California Association of American Planners (APA) for hosting the California Strategic Growth Council (SGC) team at this year’s Cultivating Our Future APA Conference! SGC’s Transformative Climate Communities-Resilient Community Associate Planner, Jess Ison and California’s Fifth Climate Change Assessment’s Research Engagement Specialist, Emely Anico attended the Conference in the City of Riverside to share their work and gain insights into the latest trends, best practices, and innovative solutions in urban and regional planning. “It was inspiring to learn from regional and local planners and partners about the successes and challenges they’re facing to make California’s communities more resilient and equitable,” said Jessica. Jessica was able to speak on the panel “Lessons Learned Across Three Transformative Climate Communities Grants in the Inland Empire,” sharing how #TCC is more than greenhouse gas emissions reductions or development – “it’s about catalytic investments that lead to comprehensive community centered benefits.” The City of Coachella, City of Ontario, and County of Riverside also spoke on the panel led by GRID Alternatives Inland Empire.?Making for a truly great event for elevating work and #partnerships in the urban and regional planning space! #CaliforniaForAll?

    Mark your calendars! The application to receive funding for Factory-Built #Housing is closing this month. The California Strategic Growth Council (SGC) has released the application for the Factory-Built Housing (FBH) Pre-Development Pilot Program. ? The FBH Pre-Development Program has $12 million available for competitive grant awards in this funding round. Awarded applicants may receive funding between $1 million to $4 million for the two-year grant term.?? The FBH Pre-Development Program will support FBH manufacturers applying for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) DOE Loan Programs Office's Title 17 Program to expand or establish new factories in California. ? ? ??Find the link to the application in the comments. This position oversees the work of the Health and Equity Program, provides subject matter expertise to California state agencies, advances implementation of strategies that promote #RacialEquity at SGC, and partners with the California Department of Public Health and Public Health Institute to facilitate California’s Health in All Policies Task Force.     ? The United States Senate has designated Oct. 2 as Energy Efficiency Day. However, at SGC everyday is #EnergyEfficiencyDay! #EEDay2024 Here are some of our energy efficient highlights: ?? Virtual Power Plants for Community Resilience SGC’s Virtual Power Plants (VVPs) for #CommunityResilience program aims to enhance neighborhood climate resilience and reduce energy costs throughout our California communities. Earlier this year, SGC officially partnered with King Energy to produce and store energy that can be used to stabilize the #energy grid during peak demand periods and be used on-site for energy backup during local emergencies. ? ? ?? BOOST Imperial Valley Alongside The Institute for Local Government, the California Strategic Growth Council launched BOOST Imperial Valley as part of the Imperial Valley Ecosystem Initiative, which is a program designed to help Imperial Valley communities access federal, state, and public #investments to meet their infrastructure needs and community development goals.? The BOOST Program, created in 2019 by ILG and SGC, supports under-resourced communities in addressing climate action by increasing awareness of funding, organizing projects, optimizing resources, strengthening stakeholder relationships, and transforming approaches.? ? ???   • ?? It’s time to ??uild, ??rganize, ??ptimize, ??trenghten, and ??ransform at the Imperial Valley Civic Ecosystem State and Philanthropic Convening!!?? ? California Strategic Growth Council Leadership will be joining the Community Assistance for Climate Equity (CACE) team this week, collaborating with the Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom, California Energy Commission, Institute for Local Government, and the Latino Community Foundation of Imperial County?to discuss local community needs in the Valley. ? All partners will spend multiple days engaging with, and learning directly from, Imperial Valley leaders to better understand the needs of their Region. The goal, to develop a path toward #climate and economic #resilience, while establishing connections that will maximize opportunities for the region and take concrete steps to bolster an ecosystem of community partners.? ? The convening, part of the BOOST Imperial Valley effort that will enable local government leaders (primarily the city managers of the seven cities that make up Imperial Valley) and County representatives, to participate in a two-year capacity-building program that will help them identify, access, and leverage public dollars, strategically coordinate with each other, and learn how to best collaborate with their communities.?? ? Events this week include, walking tours of the Cities of Calipatria and Niland with philanthropic funders, local #CBOs, and local government staff. Along with SGC’s Deputy Director of Equity and Government Transformation, Hoi-Fei Mok discussing SGC’s commitment to capacity building and their role in BOOST Imperial Valley during a bus tour of the region. Representatives from the Governor’s Office, ILG, and the Latino Community Foundation will also explain their roles in BOOST Imperial Valley and why they think this work is so important.
