Rediscovering #Akron’s Racing & Football History ???? Came across some archival footage of the #SoapBoxDerby, which I used to live (and work) right next to. The #WorldChampionships were held at #DerbyDowns, part of the same site as the old #RubberBowl—a place that saw both racing and some great football. Back in the ’90s, I was at a #StIgnatius vs. #CantonMcKinley playoff game there, with 30,000 fans packed into the stands. They were still holding events at the Rubber Bowl up until I graduated from #AkronU with my master’s in 2010. Cool to look back at how this site brought people #together for so many generations. (Remember the annual ACME-ZIP Game???) ?? Should We Follow the Federal Government’s Naming Example Again? In 1987, the U.S. Congress renamed Clarks Hill Lake to Strom Thurmond Lake, honoring a senator whose legacy is tied to #segregationist views and #racial #inequality. ?? Senator Thurmond was the President Pro-Tem of the US Senate when I was a kid. He was also the founder of the States Rights Democratic Party in 1948. Pls don’t just take my word for these things. Just ask: #NAACP, #SPLC, #MLK Jr., #ACLU, #LCCHR, R.C. Smith, J.A. Johnson, M. Fiorina, H.S. Truman, L.B. Johnson, Democratic Party, #CBC, NUL. They have all #weighed in on Senator Thurmond. Many local #communities resisted the named change, seeing the name as a celebration of someone who opposed #civil rights. While the change happened, the #controversy over the name lingers.?? Locals still call it Clark’s Hill Lake, no matter what #UncleSam says about it. Google maps has the old name. Apple Maps, the new one. Confusion abounds! This happens when the normal processes are skipped, as Congress did in 1987 when it passed a bill to that effect, Circumventing normal procedures. As did the recent #ExecutiveOrder. Now, with the Gulf of America #proposal on the table, the question arises: Should we follow the federal government’s example again? Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to fit a U.S.-centric narrative risks erasing the cultural significance that Mexico ???? and other countries hold in the region. ?? Names matter—they shape history, identity, and who we choose to honor. ??THOUGHT OF THE DAY: The best ideas don’t always become the most widespread. Take the 13-month, 28-day calendar. (??Link to Wikipedia Article on the proposed system: https://lnkd.in/gekghk4J). Every month, exactly 4 weeks. Every date, the same weekday every year. Alignment with the solar calendar can be done with strategic leap days. Simple. Logical. Efficient. But it never replaced the Gregorian system. Why? Tradition. Another example? #Betamax vs. #VHS. Betamax had better quality, but #VHS had mass adoption and cheaper licensing. Examples of great ideas that lost out: =========================== ??#LaserDiscs: Ahead of their time, but too bulky. ??#Google #Glass: Brilliant, but lacked practical use cases. ??#Electric #cars (in 1900s!): No infrastructure to support them. Now there is, more than 100 years later! The takeaway: Even the best ideas need the right timing, strategy, and support to win. ??
