The advent of AI brings both challenges and opportunities - few bigger than those faced by media and journalism professionals. At Storytime AI, we've seen first hand the underlying bias in both the image and language models we use in our app that creates personalized, culturally relevant kid's books and videos on-demand for parents and teachers. While there have been significant improvements there is still work to be done. I had the pleasure of being asked to speak about these experiences last week at Hacks/Hackers "AI Hackathon for Equity: Tackling Harmful Bias in the Information Ecosystem" along side Paige Moody of the The Washington Post here in Baltimore. The event was organized by Paul Cheung and Burt Herman who founded the Hacks/Hackers non-profit to unite journalists (“hacks”) and technologists (“hackers”) to shape the future of media and explore innovative ways of storytelling. It was an incredible event full of brilliant people, collaborations, and great conversations. Many thanks to Paul Cheung, Burt Herman, The Real News Network, and Baltimore Beat for organizing the event here in Baltimore as well as to Sameer Rao and Kaela Roeder of Technical.ly Baltimore for covering it. Looking forward to seeing you all again in Baltimore next year!
