Building literacy skills and historical knowledge while inspiring children to be the authors of their own stories!
关于我们
Everyone should be the author of their own story. Storytelling isn’t just something that happens in movies or books, but we all have our own story to tell. Story Shifters started as an opportunity to expose children of African descent to the many stories of people who look like them from all over the world. Through reading clubs and other youth programming, Story Shifters aims to build not only children's literacy skills and historical knowledge but also their confidence to develop their own stories to share with their communities and broader. When people are given access to more than one perspective of history and societal standards, they have more agency to decide what they will believe about themselves and their community. Story Shifters uses a collection of culturally relevant children's literature to expand children's understanding of their capacity and value and that of others in their community.

Happy Juneteenth! ??????? This is a holiday that is important for all Americans to celebrate as it acknowledges the arrival of news of emancipation and freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, in 1865. It became a federal holiday in 2021. Freedom and justice are values we want to instill in the next generation to continue pushing for. Books for everyone??: For early readers, check out Juneteenth by Van G. Garrett (Author) and Reginald C. Adams (Illustrator. This beautiful illustration includes lyrics from “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the main character experiences a Juneteenth parade for the first time. As the child understands the reason for celebrating, the reader also experiences the joy of Juneteenth freedom celebrations. Short chapter book for middle grade readers, ‘What is Juneteenth?’ by Kristi Jewel is a great introduction. This addition to the “What Was?” series provides a thorough introduction to the past and the present of Juneteenth. Text contains racism and disturbing imagery. For advanced and adult readers, William H. Wiggins Jr.‘s “O Freedom! Afro-American Emancipation Celebrations” is the historical standard for African American emancipation celebrations. It offers an accessible and well-researched account of the emergence and evolution of Juneteenth. Happy Freedom Day!!?????????
