Happy Holidays! As 2024 comes to an end, we want to extend our thanks to all those that have played a part in making this year so special for Storymix. This year has seen incredible milestones for us: We celebrated five years of creating stories that represent, reflect and entertain with a party and literary salon in Shoreditch. Over 400,000 copies of Storymix titles have been sold in the UK and US. There have been multiple awards and nominations, including wins for The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries by @j.t.williamswrites and illustrated by @simonedouglasillustration , as well as the DBACE Award for Social Impact for Storymix. We announced Storymix Books, our micro–publishing initiative, and its first independently published title, The Other Father Christmas written with Priscilla Mante and illustrated by shahab shamshirsaz coming out next year. Sign up to get updates on our exciting Kickstarter campaign for this project. https://lnkd.in/eniZp7e3 We’ve had a website refresh and the launch of our Family Book Club, readers’ newsletter StoryBell, and we’re selling Gift Bundles now as well from our website! Lastly, an exciting collaboration with The Write Beach Hut in 2025 to offer free day retreats for historically-underrepresented creators. These milestones wouldn’t have been possible without the support of many wonderful individuals – whether it is through creative contributions, professional collaboration, or encouragement of our mission to champion inclusive storytelling. So THANK YOU from everyone at Storymix

We’re so proud to have been recognised as one of the top 20 Black-owned businesses in the UK as part of the Channel 4 & Lloyds Bank Black in Business Campaign. To be shortlisted for this initiative has been a huge honour. Opportunities like this shine a light on Black-owned businesses and the vital work they do, and it means a lot to see Storymix included alongside so many incredible companies. While the campaign moves ahead, we’re proud to be part of the conversation and even prouder of the joyful, inclusive stories we continue to create. Congratulations to all the brilliant businesses recognised—we’re excited to see what comes next!

Our founder spoke about regret and bravery in her keynote yesterday at The Bookseller children’s conference and she shared some hard truths as well. https://lnkd.in/ehwMAx-v

At yesterday's The Bookseller Children's Conference, I gave a keynote about being brave at work. I shared that there have been points in my career where I have not been brave and that I live with the regret of that. I said that regret can be a catalyst and was a catalyst for founding Storymix. Yesterday, I chose to be brave rather than have regrets. I shared a hard truth with the industry I have worked in for 20 years: We are seeing a breathtakingly swift rollback in the championing stories from creators of colour since the summer of Black squares. I know this because I pitch and sell books to publishers. I get the bird’s eye view and I see the patterns. I know a few other things as well. Many Black creators feel like they never had a seat at the table but were a seasonal menu item. The industry is playing it very safe at the moment. Individual decisions collectively shape industry trends. I am hopeful for the publishing industry. I love this industry. But brave and honest conversations are needed to move things in the right direction and reimagine what is possible. Be Brave.

We are thrilled to announce that Storymix has been awarded a Deutsche Bank Award for Creative Entrepreneurs (DBACE)! This recognition comes at the perfect time, as we celebrate our 5th anniversary and look ahead to some exciting developments. Alongside the £15k grant (thank you, Deutsche Bank!), our founder has also joined the MeWe360 Incubator programme, which kicked off this week. The incubator has already brought together a passionate cohort of social entrepreneurs, all brimming with ideas and energy. It's a fantastic opportunity to think beyond the day-to-day operations and dream big about what’s next for Storymix. So, what's on the horizon for us? Launching our micro-publisher initiative and preparing for our 2025 release: The Other Father Xmas Securing brand partnerships Exploring crowdfunding to build new audiences Developing our illustrator-led fiction list Creating direct sales channels for underserved readers, including pop-up events As our founder shared on the night, "The road hasn't always been easy, and winning this award is a huge validation of the work Storymix is doing to incubate talent from racially minoritized backgrounds, inspire the next generation of storytellers in schools, and create books that centre all children. Every child deserves to see themselves in stories, and quality representation encourages reading. Reading for pleasure is key to social mobility." A massive thank you to Deutsche Bank and MeWe360 for their generous support. If you’d like to be part of the Storymix journey or support our mission, let’s connect! Photo credit: @mariphotography
