New research from our friends More in Common reinforces the importance of our One Small Step mission. Their latest research found that Americans value and are interested in connecting across differences. The report, “The Connection Opportunity: Insights for Bringing Americans Together Across Difference,” finds that 7 in 10 Americans feel a sense of responsibility to connect with people whose backgrounds and viewpoints are different from their own—and most Americans are interested in connecting when working together toward a shared goal. What stands in their way? A lack of opportunity and the perception that the experience won’t go well, especially when connecting across political differences. Strengthening a culture of connection isn’t just possible—it’s necessary for the health of flourishing communities. Learn more about how to do this in this groundbreaking study, based on input from over 6,000 Americans. ?? Illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all—one story at a time.
关于我们
Founded in 2003 by Dave Isay, StoryCorps has given people of all backgrounds and beliefs, in thousands of towns and cities in all 50 states, the chance to record interviews about their lives. The organization preserves the recordings in its archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered, and shares select stories with the public through StoryCorps’ podcast, NPR broadcasts, animated shorts, digital platforms, and best-selling books. These powerful human stories reflect the vast range of American experiences, wisdom and values; engender empathy and connection; and remind us how much more we have in common than what divides us. StoryCorps is especially committed to capturing and amplifying voices least heard in the media. The StoryCorps MobileBooth, an Airstream trailer the organization has transformed into a traveling recording booth, crisscrosses the country year-round in order to gather the stories of people nationwide. With the 2015 TED Prize awarded to Dave Isay, StoryCorps launched a free mobile app that puts the StoryCorps experience entirely in the hands of users and enables anyone, anywhere to record meaningful conversations with another person and upload the audio to the Library of Congress. StoryCorps also records interviews in its permanent StoryBooths located in Chicago and Atlanta. Recording an interview in a StoryCorps booth couldn’t be easier: You invite a loved one, or anyone else you choose, to a StoryCorps recording site. There you’re met by a trained facilitator who explains the interview process, brings you into a quiet recording room and seats you across from your interview partner, each of you in front of a microphone. The facilitator hits “record,” and you share a 40-minute conversation. At the end of the session, you walk away with a copy of the interview, and a digital file goes to the Library of Congress, where it will be preserved for generations to come.

Discover the amazing initiative led by Marnie H., in collaboration with The National Veterans Memorial and Museum and StoryCorps. Working with StoryCorps’ Military Voice Initiative they are beginning in education, aiming to strengthen the community's bond to service through the art of storytelling. Storytelling is a vital tool that bridges gaps between individuals, fostering empathy and understanding across diverse backgrounds. By sharing personal experiences and narratives, people can connect on a deeper emotional level, discovering commonalities that unite them and enriching their sense of community. This powerful form of communication not only preserves cultural heritage but also inspires positive change by allowing voices to be heard and stories to be shared. The National Veterans Memorial and Museum Creating and Advancing Resilience, Education, and Stability program (NVMM CARES) connects many signature programs and community partners for one all-encompassing initiative that aids community participants and especially Veterans, and their families to live healthy, successful lives after military service. Recently, StoryCorps Founder and President Dave I. and Acumen Founder and CEO Jacqueline Novogratz talked about the powerful act of listening, the urgency of human connection, bridging divides through One Small Step conversations, and more.
"Why are we alive, if not to be surprised by people and get out of our little worlds?" - Dave Isay I've long been inspired by how Dave I. demonstrates the power of listening and human connection. His work with StoryCorps is helping to bridge the divides between so many of us. This is moral leadership in action. In the latest edition of my newsletter, I interviewed Dave, the founder and president of StoryCorps.

As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to take on the Kansas City Chiefs for the Big Game, we hear from a two-time Super Bowl champion who in 2018 won a ring with the city that bleeds green: Malcolm Jenkins. The NFL star may be known for his 13-year career as a defensive back, but he’s also an activist and philanthropist, founding The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation in 2010. In a conversation for our Brightness in Black initiative, he talks with the president of the foundation, who also happens to be his mom — Gwendolyn V. Jenkins. The mother-son duo speak on their shared values. Brightness in Black is proud to partner with TMJF to share stories amplifying the voices of Philly’s youth.

StoryCorps’ One Small Step initiative and Dialogue Vanderbilt at Vanderbilt University have kicked-off a multi-year partnership to engage students and faculty to bridge divides—one conversation at a time. The official launch event last week drew a packed crowd of students and members of the Nashville community. Highlights included a discussion between StoryCorps Founder Dave Isay and Radiolab creator and Distinguished Professor Jad Abumrad, plus a panel discussion between presidents of College Republicans and College Democrats about their One Small Step conversation. Attendees also participated in mini-conversations over dinner and explored their differences and similarities through an interactive activity. And dozens of participants took one small step toward connecting across differences by signing up for a conversation.
