Excited and honored to read the coverage of the Gaston demonstration facility with EPRI and Southern Company. The 10MWh #LongDurationEnergyStorage #ThermalEnergyStorage facility is the world's largest concrete thermal energy storage facility. The Storworks team is thrilled to have demonstrated the high performance of its proprietary concrete thermal energy storage technology.?With industry-leading low cost, Storworks’ modular system can be tailored to a range of applications in two key markets: power plants and industrial decarbonization solutions. Legacy power plants can now be converted to flexible long duration energy storage resources, providing fully clean electricity with extremely attractive economics.?This conversion maintains the value that these assets have contributed to the grid and preserves the jobs and tax base for local communities, while eliminating pollution. The industrial sector accounts for 30% of global energy consumption.?As industrial customers seek economic ways to decarbonize their operations with renewable energy, Storworks’ thermal energy storage transforms variable renewable energy into on-demand 24/7 heat and steam at the lowest possible cost.?With low maintenance expense, a small footprint, and a design focused on safety and process uptime, Storworks’ thermal energy storage provides a leading solution for decarbonizing industrial operations. 关于我们
Storworks Power is developing thermal energy storage solutions to enable deep integration of renewable energy in the power and industrial sectors. We deliver reliable long-duration energy storage at the lowest cost by using proprietary high-temperature modular concrete blocks. The energy landscape is rapidly changing. Renewable energy is growing exponentially, requiring flexible assets to fill in when solar and wind energy production drops, and store excess energy when there is a surplus of renewable generation. Legacy fossil assets are being retired due to uneconomic operating costs and high emissions. Industrial customers are seeking ways to decarbonize their heat and steam supply and decrease emissions. Storworks provides energy storage by storing heat in concrete blocks, charging when excess energy is available and discharging to provide energy when needed. The system can be heated by electricity, steam, or waste heat recovery, and can provide heat, steam, or electricity when paired with a conventional steam turbine.

We appreciate the vision and support from EPRI, the DOE, and Southern Company that made this pilot demonstration possible.?Low-cost long duration energy storage is increasingly critical in the shift to low-cost intermittent renewable energy, and the Gaston project represents an important milestone in advancing the commercialization of our technology.?Storworks is excited to be working with EPRI members on additional follow-on projects to develop long-duration energy storage for existing legacy plants, helping lead the transition to renewable energy with attractive economics!
A new energy storage solution for legacy power plants—with the ability to be used alongside intermittent energy sources—could soon be possible. ? EPRI, working with Southern Company and Storworks Power, announced today its testing of the world’s largest concrete thermal energy storage (CTES) pilot. In addition to driving #decarbonization, power companies could use CTES to dial up and down coal plants (base load) or solar/wind to perform only when needed. The CTES pilot was integrated at Alabama Power Company’s Ernest C. Gaston Electric Generating plant, undergoing more than 80 successful energy charge and discharge cycles over 700 hours of total operation. The technology—which can be applied to existing or new thermal power plants including coal, natural gas, nuclear, or concentrating solar power—can go beyond electric power to applications including decarbonizing industrial heat. Neva Espinoza, Vice President?of?Energy Supply and Low-Carbon Resources at EPRI, helped lead the project and noted “The technology can also improve efficiency and extend the plant’s operational life, which can enhance customer affordability during the energy transition.” Learn more about the potential of CTES in our clean energy transition in today’s announcement. https://lnkd.in/efEHNMyd (CTES Plant Photo Courtesy of Southern Company)
