Did you know your holiday tree can be turned into valuable compost and mulch? When the time comes, tree-cycle 🌲 ♻️ responsibly by removing all tinsel, decorations, lights, stands, nails, and plastic bags before putting the tree out for curbside pickup. Flocked trees must be cut to fit in your garbage cart, as the flocking material makes them unacceptable for composting. Pickup schedules can vary by city, so double-check online for schedules and instructions. Visit https://lnkd.in/gCVJREyX or check with your local hauler.

Collaboration starts with conversation, and last week, our very own Anne Garsztka visited the Bay Area in California to have some conversations to address #FoodWaste. Some of the topics covered were consumer engagement, organics diversion, upcoming state policies for #California, and how to identify intervention pilot projects. Special thanks to PCFWC jurisdiction members Alexis Kielty with the San Francisco Environment Department, Rebecca Parnes with the City of Oakland, and Cassie Bartholomew with StopWaste for addressing #FoodLossAndWaste within your communities!

Join BayREN, our partner, for a special in-person, interactive Forum focused on permitting for heat pump water heaters on Tuesday, September 10. California has an ambitious goal of installing 6 million heat pumps by 2030; homeowners can draw on millions of dollars in incentives to switch to heat pumps; and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has adopted rules that will require zero-NOx appliances such as heat pumps. As a result, building departments will see increasing numbers of permit applications for heat pump projects. This in-person only event will include: • Opportunities to share real-world experiences • Sharing ideas with and learning from building officials, contractors and other subject matter experts Register today for the event at https://lnkd.in/gFM6Y7-5

🍎🏫 As you prepare to send your child #BackToSchool, the LAST thing on your mind should be whether or not your kids might be exposed to toxic chemicals in the school cafeteria. ⚠️ The reality is that many school cafeterias serve lunches on single-use food serviceware. This generates an immense amount of waste and it is not only bad for the #environment, but it also can harm young children’s #health by exposing them to toxic chemicals like #PFAS and styrene. That’s why CEH is proud to release a new version of our popular #DitchingDisposables toolkit! https://lnkd.in/gCuhquJ4 This toolkit is designed to help K-12 schools make the transition from single-use to healthier, more #sustainable alternatives. Above all, we suggest that schools consider #reusables first. Reusables eliminate many of the concerns associated with single-use, such as exposure to toxic chemicals (including PFAS and styrene), increased waste production, and some recyclability or compostability issues. Our newly updated toolkit still has best practices for K-12 schools looking to transition to non-toxic reuse, and also has several new resources. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or student - find out how YOU can get involved with ditching disposables! 💪🏽

    • School cafeterias should be free of toxic chemicals. And now, they can be. Image: students eating lunch on reusables trays, giving thumbs up.
    • Every year, K-12 school cafeterias across the US serve over 5 billion lunch meals, often on single-use food serviceware. This generates an immense amount of waste and is not only bad for the environment, but can also harm young children’s health by exposing them to toxic chemicals like PFAS and styrene.
