?? Great news! The European Medicines Agency has issued a positive opinion for a new treatment for parasitic worm infections! ?? The mango-flavored orodispersible tablet makes treatment easier and more accessible, especially for school-aged #children. ?? This achievement is the result of a decade-long collaboration between Mundo Sano Foundation, Liconsa (Insud Pharma) and the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP). ?? The Global Health EDCTP3-funded project STOP2030 is now testing its impact in Kenya and Ghana, paving the way for World Health Organization treatment guidelines. ?? According to the latest WHO’s progress report, more than half of the school-aged children in need of STH treatments received coverage by preventive #chemotherapy campaigns in 2023. Five worm species cause soil-transmitted helminthiases, but one is not like the rest. Strongyloides stercoralis was the last species to be included as a soil-transmitted helminth by WHO. What sets it apart? ?? S. stercoralis requires a different diagnostic technique (Baermann) ?? It presents a unique life cycle which differs from the other species ?? Including being able to reproduce inside the host ?? And its treatment of choice is #ivermectin, unlike the benzimidazoles used for other STHs These unique traits have made Strongyloides harder to diagnose, treat, and control — and for years, it was overlooked in public health efforts. Nowadays, by addressing the unique hurdles it presents, we are paving the way for more targeted research, improved diagnostic tools, and better treatment options.

Lymphatic filariasis or elephantiasis ?? Strongyloidiasis We believe a fixed-dose strategy for ivermectin can simplify treatment while reducing the risk of underdosing.
