Workshop 2 of our Street Games Pilot was a huge success! ??? It’s been amazing to witness the power of intergenerational play, where creativity, stories, and experiences merge across generations. Huge thanks to Khadijah, Mick & Robin for teaching us some of their favorite games. Stay tuned for more as we continue to bridge the past and present through the magic of streetplay in our festival on May 18! ?? This pilot is funded by the The Eisner Foundation. ??/??: Marj Kleinman & Andrea A. REPOST FROM THE ARCHIVES: Chris, a realtor in #FlatbushJunction. “My life changed instantly once the shutdown started. Realtors work on commission and real estate is a ‘people business,’ but we were ordered not to prospect new accounts by email, direct mail or phone calls. All physical showings were deemed illegal for safety reasons. I am very grateful that New York State included independent contractors in Unemployment and PUA benefits. Even though the process was hellacious, without it, I would have had to make some tough decisions, like, ‘Do I pay rent?’ or ‘Should I reserve the money I have available to me?’ Like many people, all my habits were rechanneled. I miss the gym so much! Prior to the shutdown, I would go to the gym 5-6 days a week, to release stress and get centered. I have so much energy that was wasted, and I need that back in my life. And then, there are the protests… I'm lucky to have a smart, strong mother. She and my father were very disciplined. My parents taught us not to draw attention to ourselves or seem suspicious in any manner, including having our hands in our pockets. Little things like that are normal to me because of how I grew up. The events that led up to the uproar saddened me, but I am proud to see the peaceful, organized, diverse, and unified BLM movement. I've attended several protests, here in Flatbush and by Barclays Center. It's a long battle on racism and true equality, but I've seen massive strides this time around. It's being acknowledged all around the world. The difference between now and the 1960’s is the power of people connecting through social platforms with videos. The truth will be seen and hopefully everyone will become consciously aware and improve the system. And, to those who think New York is ‘dead,’ we are still the ‘city that never sleeps’ and we’ve adjusted to the pandemic, probably better than any other state. Lots of people respect social distancing and mass gathering rules, and the majority of us have gotten accustomed to the new dining regulations. The city will ALWAYS adapt. New York is not going anywhere any time soon.” ??: Marj Kleinman ??: Lara Sienaw #stoopstories #realtors

Last week, we kicked off our new intergenerational street play pilot with Henry Street Settlement on the Lower East Side. Funded by the The Eisner Foundation, the Stoop Stories Street Games Program brings together young adults and older adults to share stories and play games together. Through a series of workshops, we will revive the old NY street games, learn how to teach them to children, and plan a community festival together this spring. Save the date for the festival: Sun May 18th, 12-4pm! More details to come. ??: Talia Krausz #stoopstories #stooplife #streetgames #streetplay #stoopball #stickball #ringolevio #hopscotch #doubledutch #eisnerfoundation #henrystreetsettlement #intergenerational #intergen

  • Celebrating Black History with a teaser of our newest short film “Stoop Chat with Maani and Mr. Sweat”. This film explores intergenerational connection through a poignant encounter between a 17-year-old and a Vietnam veteran, set against the backdrop of Bed-Stuy’s rich cultural landscape. As they play stoop ball, the documentary delves into evolving Black masculinity and identity, contrasting Mr. Sweat’s military path with Maani’s entrepreneurial aspirations. The film illuminates the complex journey of young men in 2024, grappling with disillusionment while seeking purpose, connection, and cultural heritage through shared stories and meaningful cross-generational dialogue. This short is the third in a series of intergenerational “Stoop Chat” docs designed to increase social connection between youth and elders, while preserving neighborhood narratives and celebrating cultural heritage. Funded by Brooklyn Arts Council and the Stoop Stories community, this series pilot was directed by Stoop Stories founder and Emmy-nominated producer Marj Kleinman, and award-winning documentary filmmaker Christine Thomas Yoon, in collaboration with the Stoop Stories Collective of storytellers and artists. #stoopstories #stooplife #stoopchat #intergenerational #blackhistory #community

Remembering Roger: Our founder, Marj Kleinman, wrote an essay about her neighbor in the January newsletter.

"Remembering Roger -- Too Busy?" I wrote an essay about her neighbor in the Stoop Stories January newsletter. My neighbor, Roger Lang passed away suddenly a few weeks ago. For more than 60 years, Roger was the mayor of Dean & Hoyt. He fed a flock of pigeons, flew flags from around the world, and held court on his stoop. A natural stoop storyteller, Roger and I had always planned on telling his Stoop Story together. I always thought we'd get to it when things were less?busy. Confession: I sometimes thought I was too?busy?to even walk by Roger's stoop, because his stories were long (though wonderful and highly entertaining).?I'm deeply sorry that we didn't get to hear and share his stories--for him--and for you. In?the? The Art and Science of Connection,?Kasley Killam, MPH, notes that?busyness?is the one of the largest impediment to social health and kindness. The thing is I didn't meet Roger until a few years ago, even though I lived around the corner my whole life. I was one of those people who was too?busy?to stop and talk to my neighbors.?Are you too busy???You're not alone.?This is why we make Stoop Stories. Social connection is not a nice to have--it's essential for our health.?Is there a better gift that we can give than a moment of meaningful connection? May we all slow down and talk to our Rogers. Warmly, Marj?Kleinman Founder/Executive Director p.s. Know a Roger? Who's your block mayor or grandma? You can?Nominate Your?Neighbor?on our website: https://lnkd.in/e24imkB9
