A group of technology and business leaders came together On Oct 22nd at StoneBrae Country Club for an impactful forum to discuss Generative AI (GenAI), its potential applications across industries, business and societal implications, and ways to stay ahead of rapid advancements. The experience was genuinely enriching; as one participant noted, "No one even looked at their phone during the entire four-hour discussion." It was true—the group engaged in lively debates on a range of topics and ideas, including: Data Privacy Challenges: Maintaining data privacy is crucial in the financial services industry, but in other fields, such as life sciences, strict privacy regulations can hinder research advancements. The group explored how to balance privacy with the need for progress. Reasoning in Language Models: There was a debate on how Large Language Models (LLMs) understand and make meaning of words—or whether they truly "understand" at all. Capturing Experiential Knowledge: Participants discussed the potential of using GenAI to preserve practical field knowledge from aging professionals, such as farmers, in sectors facing a decline in new entrants. Social vs. Economic Impact: The conversation extended beyond economic considerations to examine GenAI's potential for social good, including its applications in philanthropy and enhancing quality of life. Industry-Specific Use Cases: The forum addressed the unique needs and considerations across different industries—such as construction, wealth management, financial services, and healthcare—including challenges related to capturing fragmented knowledge, implementing data privacy and controls, anonymizing data for model training and change management. Keeping Up with Rapid Advancements: With daily breakthroughs in model performance, reasoning, context capabilities, agent workflows, and more, the group explored strategies to stay informed and adapt to ongoing changes.
