You could be taking much more risk than you think with your investments. Unless you or your advisor regularly monitors and rebalances your portfolio, a bull market can lead to a build-up of risk. Most 401k's are loaded up with S&P 500 index funds and you can be excused for assuming that this means that your retirement money is safely diversified. The S&P 500 is dangerously concentrated. The largest 5 stocks make up 25% of the index. According to Bank of America, ”new economy” stocks make up up more than half the index's total value, exceeding the Dot-com bubble. If your statements are looking surprisingly great, it could be a sign that you need to take a serious look. Don't wait until we're into the next bear market! No-one can reliably time the market, but you can control how much risk is in your portfolio and match it to the amount of risk that you're comfortable with.
