Sustainable Retrofit for Future-Oriented Book Distribution To sustainably and efficiently continue shipping over 100 million books a year, VVA, a publishing distribution company within Arvato, has modernized its 40-year-old high-bay pallet warehouse at the Gütersloh site. This storage facility alone holds 60,000 pallets and manages the storage and retrieval of over 2,500 pallets daily on average. Arvato selected 14 high-performance MASTer42 stacker cranes (RBG) from St?cklin for the upgrade. From March 2023 to January 2024, three cranes were replaced every nine weeks without disrupting ongoing operations. Installation was managed using a 700-ton crane, lifting equipment through an opening in the roof of the high-bay warehouse. Thanks to reliable project management and St?cklin's high in-house production capabilities at its Engineering Center in Laufen, Switzerland, all of Arvato's requirements were met seamlessly. Operations continued uninterrupted throughout the entire modernization phase, and customizations requested by customers were successfully integrated during construction. Sustainable, Future-Oriented Modernization for Hermes Fulfilment GmbH St?cklin Logistik AG has been awarded the contract as General Contractor to replace and supply new high-bay warehouses for Hermes Fulfilment in Haldensleben, near Magdeburg. The project involves replacing 61 stacker cranes and upgrading the material flow software system with new, state-of-the-art solutions. Hermes Fulfilment GmbH, part of the Otto Group, manages the entire shipping process for the Group’s retail companies and platform partners. At the Haldensleben location, they operate a shipping center for small-volume items, handling everything from incoming goods, replenishment warehousing, picking, packaging, and outgoing shipments. The facility processes up to 170 million articles annually. Two high-bay warehouses, with over 1.2 million cartons of storage space, serve as reserve and replenishment warehouses for order picking. These systems have been in operation since 1994 and have undergone several expansion phases. To ensure long-term availability, efficient and sustainable operations, and future-oriented safety, health, and energy management, St?cklin Logistik AG has invested in a comprehensive modernization. This decision was driven by the system's age, material fatigue, and control and electrical issues. Our logistical challenge: to compactly store slow-moving items, to bring fresh products to the right temperature for processing, and to deliver goods for the picking workstations very quickly and in small quantities - intelligently and in the tightest of rooms.?Our solution to this complex challenge: We implemented a combination of a single-aisle container stack channel storage system and a single-aisle FSP shuttle storage system with three temperature zones.
