When developing a new technology, filing a patent can be crucial. However, as patent rights are territorial, applications may need to be filed both in the U.S. and globally. For patent applicants seeking protection in both the U.S. and China, understanding the differences in their examination processes is essential. In this Stites & Harbison Client Alert, author James Hayne explores the differences between the U.S. obviousness standard and China's inventive step standard, offering practical insights for optimizing your patent filings in both jurisdictions. ? About a year ago, I embarked on a series of conversations with leaders of our local law firms to talk about which issues were keeping them up at night and how the Louisville Bar Association could help. One of those conversations led to the development of our inaugural New Lawyer Academy, a six-month program designed to help new attorneys quickly get up to speed from a professional -- not legal -- perspective. Our Director of Professional Development and Leadership, Lisa Anspach, took this idea from concept to execution. Thanks to her, we now have a cohort of whip-smart, ambitious new attorneys like Katherine Ison and Jackson B. Hurst-Sanders developing those "soft skills" that are imperative for long-term career success. They and their colleagues in the New Lawyer Academy are positioning themselves to be the future leaders of the Louisville legal community, and we couldn't be happier that Louisville Business First is sharing their story. Mark my words -- attorneys who graduate from the NLA program are ones to watch! The effect of DOGE on the USPTO looks like it will be substantial.?The PTAB Judges and the Supervisory Patent Examiners (SPEs) have been told they will need to return to the office, if they have a job.?As of this writing it is unclear if the Examiners, 96% of whom work remotely, will be less affected. I will be co-hosting a discussion table on Wednesday?at the International Battery Seminar. In addition to the planned discussion on "Provisional Patents to Due Diligence," we can also discuss of the effects of DOGE on the USPTO and strategies to avoid, or at least mitigate, likely adverse effects.

The latest updates to enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act have arrived: will your business be impacted? ? FinCEN and the U.S. Department of Treasury have announced that they will delay enforcing the CTA until new regulations are finalized. This extension not only provides businesses more time to achieve compliance, but also opens the door to potentially narrowing the scope of enforcement. ? This Stites & Harbison Client Alert, authored by Alison Zeitlin, Edward H. Burrell, III, William Joseph, Rachel Owsley, and Walt Robertson, offers the latest insights on CTA enforcement. ?
