THE ROAD NOT TAKEN. As I stand alongside Dr Michael Bailey the current president-elect of the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) I am reminded of the profound impact he has had on my journey in veterinary medicine.? The story begins at Coll. Vet. Med. NAH Tuskegee University where Dr. Bailey served as my radiology professor. Spirited and energetic, his passion for veterinary radiology was infectious, igniting a spark within me. The spark was so bright that I started to pursue a radiology residency. About 2 years out of vet school, I had an epiphany: radiology didn’t completely fill my cup. :-) Radiology is deeply intellectually fulfilling, but there is a magic about the hands-on aspect of surgery that is undeniable. I approached surgery with the same vigor that I had learned from Dr. Bailey during radiology class. Many articles have been written in celebration of Dr. Bailey. But on Black History Month, we celebrate not only the achievements of Dr. Bailey but also the milestones he represents within our profession. As the first-ever Black president-elect of the AVMA (@avmavets), he is both a testament to the progress we’ve made and a symbol of hope for future generations of veterinarians. Our story is a reminder that our paths may shift, but with passion, purpose and great mentorship we can continue to uplift our communities and inspire change. Thanks Dr. Bailey. Join me this week as we move from past, present and future to celebrate Black History Month.? . . . #DrCourtneyDVM #BlackHistoryMonth #VeterinaryMedicine #ProgressThroughPerseverance #CompassionForAll #InspiringGenerations

THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS. The Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, a trailblazer in the fight for civil rights, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ rights. In the early 1960s, Pauli collaborated with giants like Martin Luther King Jr., A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin. She boldly challenged the male-dominated leadership within civil rights organizations. As she wrote to Randolph, she was “perturbed over the blatant disparity between the major role which Negro women have played… and the minor role of leadership they have been assigned.” Born in 1910, Pauli was a pioneering legal scholar and the first Black person to earn a JSD from Yale Law School. A founder of the National Organization for Women and the first Black person perceived as a woman to be ordained an Episcopal priest. Pauli Murray and others paved the way for future generations to pursue their passions, including in the field of veterinary medicine. The legacy of her commitment to justice and equality aligns perfectly with the commitment to pet health equity and justice, ensuring that all communities have access to quality veterinary care. Just as she fought for the rights of marginalized voices, we continue her mission by pushing for a more inclusive and equitable future in animal health. Happy MLK Day!!! #MLKDay #VeterinaryMedicine #StitchesVeterinarySurgery #PauliMurray #CivilRights #Feminism #DrCourtneyDVM

CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH. It was so much fun joining the Care Experts podcast (CareCredit ) with hosts Selah Victor (Selah Victor ) and Melissa Knowles (@knowlesitall). We delved into the serious topic of foreign bodies in dogs, particularly the dangers of linear foreign bodies. Here we chat about why holiday decorations can be particularly terrifying. Some foreign bodies are lucky enough to pass. But when they don't, they can cause a serious health issue. Check out the full discussion with @CareCredit. Keep them healthy, my friends! #DrCourtneyDVM #Veterinarian #VetSurgery #CareCredit ##PetSafety #DogHealth #ForeignBodies #VeterinaryCare #CareCreditPodcast

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. New Year’s Pet Safety Alert. As we celebrate the holiday, let’s keep our pets safe from common surgical dangers. Trauma can occur from festive activities or accidents, while gastrointestinal obstructions may result from ingesting decorations or human food. Bites, even from seemingly playful interactions, can lead to abscesses and deep lacerations. Fractures can happen during winter play, and frostbite is always a risk in extreme cold. A little caution goes a long way in keeping our little ones safe and healthy this New Year! Let’s be on alert as we ring in the celebrations. MAKING BIG S.T.R.I.D.D.E.S. It was definitely a first for Dr. Campbell of Stitches Veterinary Surgery . He presented on osteoarthritis in two incredible venues: the luxury movie theater Cineplex and the stunning Safari Park in San Diego. Not only was it a first for him, but it had to have been the first time the audience lounged in a movie theater while hearing a talk about osteoarthritis. A huge shout out to them; he couldn’t have asked for a more engaging audience. Speaking amidst the landscape of the Safari Park was a wild adventure for him. It prompted thoughts about osteoarthritis in a variety of species. He extends a huge thank you to the entire team at Zoetis for bringing this all together. It’s inspiring for him to collaborate with individuals who share a passion for fighting osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease. He looks forward to seeing what venues 2025 brings! #DrCourtneyDVM #Veterinarian #VeterinarySurgery #VeterinaryMedicine #VeterinaryMedicine #PetHealth #OsteoarthritisAwareness
