This is Landscape Architecture. At Morganton Courthouse Square, design bridges time, preserving a community’s past while paving the way for its future. Once a seldom-used lawn, the square has been reimagined as a vibrant cultural hub in the heart of downtown... now buzzing with concerts, daily activity, public art, & connection. Rooted in 120+ years of civic tradition, this revitalization honors the site’s legacy while welcoming the next generation of gathering.   As part of #WLAM2025, we’re proud to share how landscape architecture went beyond boundaries, blending accessibility, creativity, & deep community input to bring this 1.7-acre space back to life. -Amphitheater stage + sloped lawn -Artist-designed installations, old jail doors, & vibrant community mandala -Universal access, ADA seating, & flush entries -Historic Meridian Stones highlighting True North -Biocell stormwater system + restored green space -Underground utilities, lighting, & sound infrastructure   Led by Stimmel, this project engaged a 33-person steering committee, the NC Arts Council, & residents of all ages, from toddlers dancing on the mandala to vendors setting up for summer festivals. ✨This is what it means to revitalize with purpose. Once a vibrant hub for Black Charlotteans — from baptisms in 1926 to performances by James Brown and speeches by Malcolm X — this park holds stories of resilience, culture, and place. Check out the great progress being made at The Grounds! Our team of Landscape Architects and Civil Engineers have been hard at work to help make the vision a reality. The Grounds is a transformative 100-acre mixed use development in the Deacon Boulevard area, surrounding some of North Carolina’s most iconic event venues. Spearheaded by a visionary partnership of Carter, Front Street Capital, Wake Forest University, the City of Winston-Salem, and the State of NC, the site will blend vibrant and unique retail, food and beverage options, entertainment, office, walking trails, and residential living all in a more pedestrian friendly environment.
