We educate and empower low-income Arizona high-schoolers to enroll in and graduate from college.

关于我们

STEP College-Prep is an unprecedented opportunity for low-income high-school students to forge a pathway of success through higher education for themselves, their families, and their communities. Through a focused two-year College-Prep Program and a life-transforming three-week Alaska Leadership Expedition, students gain the confidence, knowledge and leadership skills to succeed in college and beyond. Mission: To equip motivated low-income Arizona students with the knowledge, confidence & leadership skills to obtain a college degree. Vision: To equip students with the most critical tool they can possibly have for future success in college and beyond: belief in themselves. Guiding Principles: We seek & support low-income high-school students with high potential who have little or no guidance in preparing for college; are the first generation in their family to pursue a college degree; & will make a significant commitment to their studies & to STEP’s College-Prep Program. We expose students to institutions most likely to provide the resources to make the students successful. STEP was founded in 2002 by Dr. Tracy Baynes, who had previously worked as an Instructor with National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), Outward Bound, & Semester at Sea. She had a vision to bring these immersion leadership experiences to low-income youth striving to be pioneers in their families & communities. For the past 10 years, STEP has been taking low-income high-school students on a transformational Wilderness Leadership Expedition. In 2011, we added our 2-year College-Prep Program. High schools with which STEP predominantly works have a median college completion rate of only 8%. Of STEP’s College-Prep Program students, 100% have graduated high school, & 96% are in college or have earned a degree. Over the past 5 years, 100% of our students have gone directly to college from high school & 100% are currently attending college.

Did you know that we offered two new summer programs for STEP scholars?! 1?? SEAscapes: An onshore program divided into two themes, “Introduction to Oceanography” and “Oceans and Society.” Students conducted scientific fieldwork and learned about the history of Cape Cod as a center of global maritime trade and commercial fisheries. 2?? SEA Expedition: An offshore sailing expedition aboard the tall ship Corwith Cramer! Students sailed the waters of New England, learned navigation and sail handling, participated in watch rotations, and conducted scientific deployments. ?? Here's what scholar Mishka S. shared about her experience: "The biggest lesson I learned was to try everything and never miss an opportunity. Sailing was truly an amazing and educating experience' it has actually helped me rediscover my passion for oceanography and marine sciences. I want to use the knowledge I gained during the trip for an upcoming science competition... And this trip has inspired me to embrace my passion for marine biology!" Thank you to our partners at Sea Education Association for helping bring this to life! #STEPcollegeprep #equalopportunity #ThisIsSTEP #STEPPERsInAction #equaleducation

Emile recently traveled to Alaska for the STEP Alaskan Expedition with NOLS. Reflecting on the experience, Emile shared, "I was so excited—I had never been to Alaska, and I was curious about what I would learn and take from the trip. I can say I took a lot." The expedition was full of surprises, like when Emile discovered that "it didn’t get dark in Alaska in the summer. It took some time to get used to, but overall, it was amazing, and the people at the base were very welcoming." One of the most memorable moments was kayaking to Shop Bay Glacier. "As we kayaked into the beach, it was so beautiful I started singing, and everybody sang along. It was just fun and very memorable—it brought everyone’s morale up," Emile recalled. The trip also had its challenges, like dealing with swarms of mosquitoes. But with the help of an instructor, Emile learned to shift focus from complaints to solutions, and now recommends it for anyone and everyone. "This trip will not be what you expect—in a good way. You will learn things about yourself you didn’t know before, challenge yourself, and gain memories that you will never forget. I learned that I can push myself beyond what I ever imagined. And I came back with new leadership skills, confidence, and lifelong memories. Alaska changed me, and I’m grateful for every moment."

9 Questions with Mariana about her STEP Alaskan Expedition experience with NOLS: 1. How did you feel about going to Alaska? "I was so excited!! I knew that this was an opportunity that would help me in many ways, so I could not wait to go to Alaska." 2. How did you prepare for the expedition? "I had been going to the gym and working out, so that helped out with the physical part. For my mental preparation, I mostly spent time with my family and would tell myself positive things in order to go in with an open mind." 3. What was the most challenging part? "Being on rudder, [which is the part of the boat used for steering]. My legs would fall asleep within the first five minutes, and I had to switch to being in the front." 4. What was your favorite moment? "When we used the circus tent and everyone cooked pizzas together. We had conversations about everything and it was just fun to spend time with each other." 5. What did you learn about yourself? "That I am capable of more things than I think." 6. What qualities did you build? "Leadership, courage, and mindfulness." 7. How has this experience changed you? "It has provided me with the ability to look outside of the box and take things from a different perspective. I communicate better, I am able to present my own ideas and lead myself through any situation, but still being able to ask for help if I need it." 8. What makes this expedition unique? "There is truly nothing like this. You could go camping with friends or family, but there is nothing like connecting with the group and mentors you have, creating those memories with them, and learning so many things about yourself." 9. Any final thoughts? "Thank you to everyone. My mentors Ramon, Lauren, and Liz. I couldn’t imagine being on the expedition without their constant support and encouragement. I also want to thank the donors for making this possible! And to Tracy, STEP, and NOLS for making this expedition an opportunity for us. Also, my STEP group, STEP 1 was truly unique and full of so many fun memories that I am so glad to have made with them!!" ?????
