Cities across the globe are already implementing sewer thermal energy projects. For instance, Vancouver, Canada has integrated a wastewater heat recovery system in its False Creek neighborhood, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Another large scale sewage thermal energy system has just started in Toronto, Canada. It is used to heat and cool a hospital. Similarly, European countries like Switzerland and Germany are investing in large-scale wastewater heat recovery initiatives. 40,000 Houses being heated from wastewater heat in Hamburg! The video below is a 3min news report on a project in Hamburg, Germany to recycle heat from wastewater for heating 40,000 houses (via a district heating network). The audio is in German, but some brief details are: - Supply temperature from the heatpumps is 95degC - To supply this heat, the wastewater will be cooled by only 3degC - 3x heatpumps are already in place, a 4th heatpump will follow soon - Carbon neutral heating for 40,000 houses!
