On February 7th, the STEMCAP Club at Salt Lake Valley Youth Center (SLVYC) welcomed its first-ever entertainment speakers—Tim Bassett and Russell Samowitz! ? As seasoned audio, lighting, and production technicians, Tim and Russell spoke about their careers. From backstage stories to career-building advice, they gave students an unfiltered look into the live-music industry. ? ?? Tim’s journey? From labeling bottles at a staffing agency with a child on the way to becoming the production manager of The Complex. ?? Russell’s story? He gave advice on how anyone could bounce back to building a career, detailing his career at the House of Blues. ? Students shared their favorite music, saw Tim’s tour laminates, and got real insights for entering this industry. ? On February 20, 2025, Salt Lake Valley Youth Center (SLVYC) STEMCAP students had a behind-the-scenes tour of the Delta Center, gaining insights into arena operations, career paths (including those for people who are systems impacted), and the evolving role of STEM in sports and entertainment. ???? ?? ????????????, ????????????, ????????????! ?? STEMCAP is proud to have brought the Sundance Film Festival (Sundance Institute) to youth-in-custody in Salt Lake City! On January 27, 2025, STEMCAP provided an opportunity for DSI and Gemstone students at Salt Lake Valley Youth Center to experience the magic of film in person at the ???????? ???????????? ?????????????? in downtown Salt Lake City. And of course, no movie experience is complete without popcorn and snacks to set the stage. ? ? ???????? ?????? ??????????????? The featured film, ???? ??????????, is a coming-of-age story of a 15-year-old in a rural Macedonian village and his efforts toward pursuing his dreams of being a DJ.? ? Being in a theater created a buzz of energy. The teacher and staff expressed excitement at this unique opportunity that was so different from usual class time. Many students noted they had never been to a Sundance screening, and had never visited a theatre like Rose Wagner.? ?
