STEM NOLA congratulates our partner InspireNOLA Charter Schools for emerging as the Top Performing Network of Schools in New Orleans! The organization achieved significant letter grade growth across all seven schools during the 2023-2024 school year! Over the last four years, #STEMNOLA has provided curriculum aligned STEM hands-on engagement during in-school and out-of-school time for InspireNOLA schools. InspireNOLA is the only B+ school network in New Orleans. Six of seven InspireNOLA schools earned an 'A' progress grade, with one earning a 'B' progress grade. All InspireNOLA High Schools (Edna Karr, Eleanor McMain, and McDonogh 35) are 3 of the top 4 non-selective high schools in New Orleans. STEM NOLA is thrilled to celebrate our partners InspireNOLA Charter Schools as the highest performing open enrollment organization in New Orleans, and the only B+ Network in the city! The recent release of the Louisiana Department of Education’s School Performance Scores (SPS) highlights their remarkable progress during the 2023-2024 school year. Edna Karr High School stands out as the only non-selective high school in New Orleans to earn an ‘A’ letter grade, while Alice M. Harte Charter School is the highest performing non-selective elementary school in the city with a ‘B’ grade. In addition, McDonogh #35 College Preparatory School#35 College Preparatory School and Eleanor McMain Secondary School both achieved ‘B’ grades, demonstrating significant growth. Capdau S.T.E.A.M., InspireNOLA’s newest school, achieved the largest single-year growth in the city, jumping two letter grades! This success is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the students, teachers, staff, families, and communities that make up the InspireNOLA family. We had an incredible turnout at STEM NOLA's STEM Saturday on November 9, 2024! Themed "The Power of Chemistry" and fueled by Chevron, STEM Saturday engaged 282 students in grades K-12th, with 196 students preregistered and 86 students registering on-site. Attendees represented 147 different schools across the region -- with 83 students from grades K-2nd, 106 from grades 3rd-5th, 44 from grades 6th-8th, and 37 students from grades 9th-12th. STEM Saturday was especially impactful for families who rely on support, as 72% of participants reported qualifying for free or reduced-cost meals. 20 volunteers dedicate 70 hours of mentorship and support, helping to ensure STEM Saturday ran smoothly and that each participant had a positive, hands-on learning experience. This STEM Saturday was a true community effort, made possible through the generosity of Chevron, Boeing, Entergy, NORD, the City of New Orleans, and New Orleans City Council. On November 16, 2024, STEM NOLA's STEM Fellows program offered 23 students from 15 schools an immersive, hands-on experience where they explored the Morganza Spillway and Levee systems in New Orleans. Using computers, students modeled and examined the vital flood control systems along the Mississippi River, learning firsthand the procedures that protect our region from natural hazards like flooding and hurricanes. Through this experience, students were introduced to potential career paths in flood control, environmental safety, and infrastructure management, all while receiving guidance from professional mentors and experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. This session not only provided them with a deeper understanding of critical systems in our community but also sparked their interest in STEM careers that shape our world. The STEM Fellows Program empowers students to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) through immersive learning and mentorship. At STEM NOLA, our mission is to expose, engage, and inspire the next generation of innovators, creators, makers and entrepreneurs.
