We had an incredible STEM Saturday on October 12, 2024, focusing on the “Heart & Circulatory System.” With 223 participants, students engaged in hands-on activities like dissecting sheep hearts, exploring virtual reality models, and building stethoscopes and mechanical hearts! This event highlighted the enthusiasm for STEM in our community, with 116 schools represented and a significant number of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. A huge thank you to our sponsors and all the healthcare professionals and volunteers who made this possible! We’re excited for future STEM Saturdays and STEM Fests that will continue to expose, engage and inspire the next generation of innovators, creators, makers, and entrepreneurs! #STEMNOLA #STEMEducation #FutureInnovators #STEMGlobalAction #Innovation #DiversityInSTEM #Empowerment #FutureOfWork #WorkforceDevelopment #EconomicDevelopment #CommunityImpact #YouBelongInSTEM #CradleToCareer STEM Global Action STEM Learning Ecosystems Entergy Boeing https://lnkd.in/g6DAE78i

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) highlights the vital role of a diverse STEM workforce in shaping our future through innovation and economic growth. STEM NOLA | STEM Global Action expose, engage, and inspire future innovators, creators, makers, and entrepreneurs by offering hands-on STEM-based activities to students in grades K-12. Our mission helps tackle the growing need for skilled professionals in science, technology, engineering, and math across various industries. As technology evolves, so does the definition of the STEM workforce. It's no longer limited to traditional roles like engineers and scientists; it now includes emerging fields such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and environmental science. There’s a pressing concern about a skills gap, where educational programs often don’t match the needs of employers, risking our ability to meet global challenges. New approaches in education, like hands-on learning and cross-disciplinary projects, are essential to prepare students for this dynamic workforce. To address the skills shortage, innovative strategies are emerging at all educational levels. Programs like robotics camps and coding competitions engage students early, while higher education is shifting towards practical, industry-aligned training. Collaborations between universities and employers, alongside NSF-funded initiatives, are reimagining how we prepare the next generation of STEM professionals. These efforts aim to create a workforce that is not only skilled but also adaptable to the challenges ahead. #STEM #Innovation #FutureWorkforce #Education #Technology #STEMEducation #WorkforceDevelopment #CradleToCareer https://lnkd.in/gjT2Qki5

In her October 15th article in theGrio and Yahoo Tech about STEM NOLA fellow Naya Ellis, Maiysha Kai highlights the inspiring journey of this New Orleans teen who created the WingItt smartwatch to help detect early signs of a stroke. At just 15 years old, Naya was motivated by her grandmother's post-stroke experience, noting, “We had to create a real-life solution to a real-life problem.” This innovative device aims to monitor critical health indicators like heart rate and speech patterns, alerting family members and emergency services if risk factors are detected. The mission of STEM NOLA | STEM Global Action is to expose, engage, and inspire future innovators through STEM activities, particularly for low-income and underserved students. The STEM Fellows program plays a crucial role in supporting these young leaders by providing hands-on learning experiences and mentorship. With initiatives like WingItt, Ellis embodies the program’s goals, showcasing how immersive education can empower students to explore their interests in STEM fields. Everyone at STEM NOLA is incredibly proud of Naya's achievements. As she works on making WingItt affordable and user-friendly for seniors, she emphasizes her commitment to helping those in need: “I’m making [WingItt] to help lower-income people.” Naya's dedication to innovation and her desire to uplift others through her work not only positions her as a leader in her community but also as a future physician aiming to save lives and inspire change. #STEMNOLA #FutureInnovators #YouthEmpowerment #STEMEducation #Innovation #ChangeMakers #HealthTech #WomenInSTEM #Inspiration https://lnkd.in/gs_uERaW
