As we near the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, Steinberg Hart proudly celebrates Partner Katia McClain. Born in Mexico City, Katia brings a bicultural approach to architecture, creating culturally responsive, community-centered projects. She leads affordable housing and education projects across California. Katia champions diversity, mentoring future Latina architects and supporting women in the industry, making impactful contributions through her role with the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley board. Katia is also a contributing author of "Latinas in Architecture and Allies Vol II: Stories of Raising the 1% One Latina at a Time," where she reflects, “Being born in Mexico and identifying as a Latina in the U.S. isn’t a binary experience for me. Labels create rigid, simplistic definitions of success, suggesting absolutes, but I am far more complex than that. Challenge the limitations of labels and set your own standards. This week, in partnership with our clients at Los Angeles World Airports, Steinberg Hart Senior Associate, Michael Sweeney, Director of Planning, Benedetta Del Vecchio, and Designer, Eric Swanson, ran workshops at Polytechnic High in Van Nuys for World Architecture Day. Through the ImpactLAX Youth Program, LAWA connects with and creates opportunities for K-12 students in local Title 1 schools near both LAX and the Van Nuys airport. These World Architecture Day workshops aimed to give students exposure and first-hand understanding of the ways in which architects and planners are responsible for the architecture and urban design that surrounds us, and how design impacts and influences daily life.

UC Riverside has broken ground on the Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Facility (UTLF), designed by Steinberg Hart in partnership with McCarthy Builders. This state-of-the-art building will provide lecture halls, classrooms, labs, and a dance studio all helping to foster collaboration across the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences, The College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and the Bourns College of Engineering. The UTLF complex will serve as the new campus gateway building.??Its flexible interdisciplinary spaces, and welcoming courtyard, will enhance student experience and promote cross-discipline learning. We're excited for the opportunities this project will bring to students! Last week we celebrated the ribbon cutting for Patriots' Hall in Dripping Springs, Texas. Patriots' Hall, is a permanent retreat and resource hub designed to support veterans and their families. The 10-acre Hill Country retreat features a variety of spaces, including a 7,100-square-foot main hall for workshops, a wellness center for VA claims assistance, and a meeting house for local veteran organizations. “Having a venue that allows veterans to come together and connect is something many take for granted,” said Scott McKean, a retired lieutenant general and Patriots’ Hall’s Executive Director. “ As we found out, there aren’t really [any].” The site provides a tranquil environment for veterans to connect, heal, and grow. This community-driven project addresses the unique challenges veterans face, fostering camaraderie and offering resources for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. We’re excited to announce the groundbreaking of the long-awaited Oakhurst Campus in the Sierra Nevada foothills, designed to provide crucial access to higher education for the surrounding communities. Located over 45 miles from the nearest college, this 31,000-square-foot campus will serve 300 students, faculty, and staff, with programs in natural sciences, arts, engineering, business, and childcare. The design blends indoor and outdoor spaces, reflecting the picturesque natural surroundings with its central courtyard, and a multipurpose patio off the Library/Community Room with views of the Sierra Nevada peaks. This transformative campus will foster academic and social engagement, strengthening the community and offering new opportunities for growth. We’re thrilled to announce the groundbreaking of California State University-Dominguez Hills Phase IV Student Housing and Resident Dining, a major step toward providing affordable housing for 288 students, fostering a connected, supportive community with shared lounges, collaborative spaces, and an indoor-outdoor courtyard. Following the successful completion of the 506-bed Phase III student housing project, Phase IV will include the university’s first resident-centered dining facility, offering affordable, healthy meals with indoor and outdoor seating, connecting the central campus to the residential area. The project exceeds energy performance goals and represents a strong investment in equity, inclusion, and student well-being. Today, California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo took an exciting step toward enhancing student life by breaking ground on a transformative student housing project that will add 4,100 new beds and renovate 1,300 beds over the next ten years, enhancing campus living and increasing housing affordability and accessibility. As the largest student housing development currently underway in the state of California, the Steinberg Hart-designed project will feature nine new buildings and renovations to six existing Red Brick buildings. The project will create smaller “neighborhoods” and pedestrian pathways to foster a stronger sense of community, with sustainable materials that reflect Cal Poly’s commitment to eco-conscious, high-quality housing. The new program will leverage innovative volumetric steel modular construction, a first on a CSU campus, enabling a systematized and streamlined construction process over the next decade. With Phase 1 set to be completed by Fall 2026, this project will be a cornerstone of campus life, blending modern design with university traditions to support student success and belonging. Did you know The Children's Museum of Eau Claire was honored with the prestigious AIA Wisconsin Special Recognition Award? This recognition highlights the museum's innovative design and lasting impact on the community of Eau Claire. The Children's Museum of Eau Claire represents a transformative leap from its modest origins to a striking 25,000-square-foot carbon-neutral facility that engages and educates children while revitalizing the downtown area. The building has become a hub for family activities, with a 400% increase in memberships and over 150,000 visitors since opening. Central to the museum’s design is its use of whole-tree construction, which integrates 31 whole-tree columns and 126 whole-tree trusses and girders into the structural framework. These timber elements are not only visible but form an essential part of the museum’s educational experience, demonstrating sustainable building practices and creating a tactile environment for exploration. Sustainable features such as geothermal wells, photovoltaic cells, and a well-insulated enclosure reinforce the museum’s commitment to carbon neutrality, while the use of local materials and design elements roots the building firmly in its regional context.
