To celebrate Women’s History Month, we are highlighting leaders in the labor movement – past and present. Today we are honoring Hattie Canty – a hotel maid turned powerful labor leader. As president of Culinary Workers Union Local 226, she spearheaded one of the longest, most successful strikes in U.S. history, fighting for fair wages and dignity for all workers. Her legacy reminds us that the labor movement is strongest when we stand together.

This week’s Back to Basics video dives into the ins and outs of our union’s Women of Steel Committees. According to the USW constitution, every local should have a Women of Steel Committee where members can sharpen their activist skills, learn and lead. All female-identifying members of the USW are considered Women of Steel, and many WOS activists are leading the way when it comes to mentoring their union sisters, serving on their local committees and spearheading community engagement. Drop us a ?? if you’re a Woman of Steel and let us know how this program has impacted you.

Our union was founded on principles outlined in our Constitution – which every member receives upon joining. These principles include: ?? Our aim to unite all working people into the union ?? What we fight for, including better wages and shorter hours ?? Our commitment to education, legislative action, social welfare and democracy We also host a convention every three years as stipulated in Article VI of the Constitution. There, delegates nominated by their Districts come together to vote on amendments and policy resolutions – democracy in action! Need a copy of the constitution? This Women's History Month, we honor sisters of the labor movement, past and present, like Tawnya Gustafson, who excel in their fields and uplift others through their leadership. Gustafson trains workers at the U.S. Steel Keetac Plant in Keewatin, MN, and previously served as a union vice president. She was recently elected union steward for United Steelworkers Local 2660 and actively advocates for workers' rights as a member of the safety and human and civil rights committees and as chair of her local Women of Steel chapter. In today’s Back to Basics video, Megan Butler of Local 7600 talks about Communication and Action Teams (CATs), the networks of rank-and-file volunteer communicators who are strategically deployed throughout our workspaces to keep members on the same page. Fun fact: Megan and her local siblings were presented with the Groundwork Award at this year’s Alliance of Health Care Unions Leadership Conference for all they’ve done to build out their CAT ahead of major bargaining that begins this spring!

This Women’s History Month, we’re honoring women of the labor movement – past and present. Today we’re highlighting Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, a trailblazing activist, lawyer, and co-founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW) whose legal work helped shape workplace protections under the Civil Rights Act. A champion for racial and gender equality, Murray fought to ensure fair treatment for all workers, laying the foundation for the labor rights we continue to defend today.
