This Women's History Month, we honor sisters of the labor movement, past and present, like Tawnya Gustafson, who excel in their fields and uplift others through their leadership. Gustafson trains workers at the U.S. Steel Keetac Plant in Keewatin, MN, and previously served as a union vice president. She was recently elected union steward for United Steelworkers Local 2660 and actively advocates for workers' rights as a member of the safety and human and civil rights committees and as chair of her local Women of Steel chapter. Read more about her in this feature from her local newspaper: https://lnkd.in/dFFg-fgV

  • In today’s Back to Basics video, Megan Butler of Local 7600 talks about Communication and Action Teams (CATs), the networks of rank-and-file volunteer communicators who are strategically deployed throughout our workspaces to keep members on the same page. Fun fact: Megan and her local siblings were presented with the Groundwork Award at this year’s Alliance of Health Care Unions Leadership Conference for all they’ve done to build out their CAT ahead of major bargaining that begins this spring!

  • This Women’s History Month, we’re honoring women of the labor movement – past and present. Today we’re highlighting Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, a trailblazing activist, lawyer, and co-founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW) whose legal work helped shape workplace protections under the Civil Rights Act. A champion for racial and gender equality, Murray fought to ensure fair treatment for all workers, laying the foundation for the labor rights we continue to defend today.

  • On International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to equity for all. ?? Corporate greed tries to divide us, but the labor movement lifts each other up—no matter our differences. Our Women of Steel committees are the heart of this fight, ensuring that working people stand strong together. We won’t back down. We won’t be divided. Stronger together, always. ? https://lnkd.in/eJyhXddr

  • ? Did you know we have siblings that help keep our roads and sidewalks safe in winter climates? ?? ? Members of Local 763 mine and process salt at the American Rock Salt mine in Mount Morris, N.Y. The facility is the largest-producing salt mine in the United States and supplies much of the northeastern U.S. with salt used to melt snow and ice.? ? To learn more about these siblings, stay tuned for their feature in the upcoming issue of USW@Work.??

  • ?? The SAVE Act is a threat to workers—especially our Women of Steel siblings. ?? This Republican-backed bill would make voter registration harder because: ?? It ignores name changes, making it harder for married people to register. ?? It eliminates online and mail-in registration, disrupting automatic voter registration. ?? It could disenfranchise millions who move each year by requiring re-registration with citizenship documents. The SAVE Act would block eligible voters from the ballot box. Tell your representative to oppose it now: https://lnkd.in/eTdpv7aV

  • This Women’s History Month we’re honoring women of the labor movement, past and present. Meet Doris Caldwell, a current powerhouse leader in USW Local 9504 in Alabama. After serving 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, Doris brought her dedication, leadership, and strength to the union, where she continues to build solidarity and empower her fellow members. As an IT planner at Maxwell Air Force Base, she uses her experience to strengthen and grow her local, proving that the skills forged in service translate into powerful advocacy on the shop floor. Doris embodies what it means to be a Woman of Steel—lifting others up, leading with purpose, and making history every day. Read her full story here: https://lnkd.in/egpKWnRc

  • On this day in 1913, President William Howard Taft signed the bill creating the Department of Labor, a hard-won victory after years of relentless advocacy from organized labor. Workers demanded a voice in the Cabinet—and they won. A century later, the fight for worker power continues. What are other ways you think workers can help balance the power of the billionaire class?
