Norman Levesque, Information Systems Analyst Specialist at Lucas Milhaupt in Warwick, Rhode Island, started volunteering to coach his children when they were old enough to play sports, 30 years ago and he still coaches today. “When my granddaughter was old enough to play soccer three years ago my daughter and I started coaching together. We both took the Foundations of Positive Coaching training that Steel Sports offered, learning the core values of Teamwork, Respect, Integrity and Commitment. We focus on all four core values centered around Teamwork, as it is just as important as Respect, Integrity and Commitment. The Steel Sports Sponsorships has helped more than 75 children that we have coached together. It defers the cost of uniforms, field maintenance and equipment. Heather Heiking, Marketing Manager at MTI Motion gives us a parent’s perspective on her son being coached by her husband and how they team up to get him through the ups and downs of youth sports. “The entire team learned so much from the Cooperstown experience. Losing is truly a valuable lesson. What all the parents saw as a result was a group of boys who learned how to selflessly support each other, stay positive, play like a synchronized team, and apply those learnings to the game they love. They are the best of friends, and it shows. This team is learning and living integrity, commitment, teamwork, and respect with every game. This story doesn’t end with loss, it has a tremendous ending. The day after the boys came home, they went right into playoffs here in Lake County. They won all four play-off games to make it to the division championship. The boys ended up winning that final game thus winning the Championship for the Lakeshore Feeder Baseball League. My son was the closing pitcher for that game, and he was calmer than I’ve ever seen him. The boys made the winning play together. Flashback Friday! October 4th was National Manufacturing Day, and in celebration we were proud to see Dunmore team up with Steel Sports to host local Steel United high school student-athletes at Dunmore’s Bristol, PA facility! With the demand for 3.8 million new manufacturing workers by 2033, it’s critical to inspire the next generation. The athletes brought incredible energy and a passion to learn about the industry. Dunmore was able to share the values of teamwork, integrity, commitment, and respect with them, as well as how those values guide Dunmore in everything they do—from keeping safety and quality top of mind to driving innovation and delivering superior customer experiences. Keith Bendyk, President, JPS Composite Materials, has a completely different perspective on the impact positive coaching can have, he sees it and booms it from the broadcast booth! As the voice of the Lady Rebels Lacrosse Program at Byrnes High School, Keith imparts our Core Values to the crowd and well as the players. For example, before each game Keith will announce to the crowd: “We request that you model good sportsmanship by refraining from negative cheers, chants, taunts or behavior towards athletes, coaches, officials or other spectators. We are committed to providing a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment that promotes fair play and RESPECT for all. Spectators are not allowed onto the field at the conclusion of tonight’s game until players have shaken hands. Heather Herling, VP Human Resources & EHS at Lucas Milhaupt started coaching softball when she was still in high school, coaching her younger sister and now coaches her daughters. She has helped build the Franklin Flame Softball Program to provide opportunities for girls to play sports and receive the benefits sports can offer with a positive coach. “I utilize all of the Core Values in my coaching. Teamwork, playing for the name on the front of the jersey, is so important in sports. Players need to invest personally but prioritize the team in their actions and decisions. Respect for coaches, players, umpires and fans is very important, and the players should expect that respect in return. As a coach I hold them accountable, but I also hold all those involved, including fans, to be respectful. Integrity comes into play when the team pulls together and supports everyone, regardless of their skill or talent level, everyone is a part of the team.
