Nick Jones, an Engineer at Atlantic Service Company, KASCO LLC in the UK was not a Rugby fan. But when his son’s team was in danger of folding because their coaches left, Nick stepped up to help other dads coach the team. “We had four players then, it was a struggle at times, but now we have 25 players and four other coaches. We are a nice team who always play with a smile on our faces and enjoy everyone’s company. It’s great seeing the boys grow up and developing not only in rugby but also in life. I know there is a lot of friendships being made for life. When John Leavitt, Director of Technology at OMG Roofing Products took over the Hale-Ray High School Girls Basketball team in 2022 they had gone 0-20 the year before so few kids wanted to play. This year, they are 16-4 heading into the state tournament. This article from the Hartford Courant explains how John turned things around at the school he attended and how he got the girls to believe in themselves. “The first year, it was all about trying to make them feel included,” said Leavitt, a 1987 Hale-Ray graduate in his third year of coaching. “I wanted them to enjoy it. I didn’t want to lose anybody. Year two, I started to put the pressure on. They kicked back, then they were OK. I have five seniors this year- I told them ‘I can’t be easy, you won’t be as good as you can be,’ and they’ve allowed me to push them hard. It’s been amazing. Brian Seay quit sports because of bad coaching. But as the Content Manager for Steel Sports, he saw how positive coaching can have the right impact on kids. So he returned to sports as a coach. “To me, coaching needs to strike a balance between pushing players to grow and supporting them both on and off the field. It should be about teaching and learning while celebrating the progress the team makes. This type of coaching was introduced to me through the Steel Sports Coaching System.
