We can't have a generation of children who are environmentally illiterate in a society that is environmentally highly impacted. How ?? Prepare pre-service teachers on how to bridge environmental education and foundational literacy skills. ?? Foster a new generation of educators who view environmental stewardship as a core teaching component. ?? Prepare educators to create meaningful classroom experiences that connect literacy to environmental justice. ?? Design model curricula that align environmental education with California's Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs) ?? Equip educators to address climate and social challenges while inspiring action among students. What a delight to spend the Saturday afternoon with committed?#STEAMeducators?and their family members at the @Fitzgerald Marine Reserve to observe, contemplate, and learn from more than humans. Fielsketching is more than just drawing with annotations. It is a skill that uses all senses to understand how nature adapts, responds, provides shelter and nourishment, and is part of who we are. Despite natural and human-made disasters, nature has carried the seeds of life for millions of years. Nature is arranged to care for all that lives through an endless interdependent flow of energy and circulation of resources such as water, nitrogen, and carbon. The human being’s relationship to nature is one of vital dependency, which entails making sense of the world. What participants shared: "Being on the coast, learning from a talented artist and teacher, and being in community with other educators were all parts of the experience I appreciated. I think what was most moving for me was being present, slowing down, and looking closely in nature. Starting to draw a shell only to have it move a little bit and realizing it is a hermit crab. Trying to draw a rock and realizing how hard it is to capture the edges, especially the curves and softer edges. Looking around and seeing a group of us with our field books." "This was a very warm and welcoming activity for young, old, and families. It was calming and inspiring to engage in the close observation of nature and listen to and share with others what we learned!" "This was a great opportunity to learn a new skill, practice technique,?participate in outdoor learning, and have fellowship with like minded thinkers and educators. This event provided much needed connectivity and community building. I would definitely recommend this type of program to all nature advocates and lifelong learners!" "I loved and appreciated seeing so many folks come together for an afternoon of learning, joy, nature & community! Slowing down and appreciating the smallest and biggest things in front of my eyes was a beautiful experience.?" At the?STEAM Learning Institute,?we provide free resources and workshops on creating thriving spaces in STEAM. Our programs provide the foundations for liberatory education by teaching to center STEAM identity, culturally responsive teaching, experiential learning, trust, play, and healing. Our next offering will allow educators from SFUSD, Oaklands, Marin County, San Mateo to celebrate fieldksetching at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. Through nature immersion and nature journaling, educators will learn to:? ? observe and experience the world through their senses by paying attention to sounds, color, touch, smell, and taste with playfulness. ? nurture their relationships with each other and the environment by listening more deeply while experiencing awe and wonder. ? integrate scientific learnings with their emotions, thoughts, and experiences in their journal pages while feeling calmer by being with nature. The STEAM Learning Institute exists to address four interrelated issues that contribute to the marginalization of STEAM educators and their students: 1- Dominance of Conventional Educational Practices? 2- Lack of Safe, Anti-Racist Spaces for Marginalized STEAM Educators? 3- Insufficient Attention to the Benefits of Liberatory and Decolonial STEAM 4- Marginalization in STEAM Fields ? We must build a more just and liberatory educational landscape that integrates building trust and includes nature-based practices, culturally responsive practices that celebrate the learner’s identities, experiential learning that fosters a sense of agency and empowerment, storytelling, arts, healing-centered education, Indigenous and Community forms of knowledge and more. ? Rebuilding trust means supporting healing and reconciliation: acknowledging harm and decolonizing how schools interact with parents, guardians, and students while offering alternatives that are kin, inclusive, and reciprocal. ? Decolonizing work aspires to re-cover, re-cognize, re-create, re-present, and re-search using our ontological and epistemological constructs centered on marginalized voices.
