Its been amazing to see Yoseph Ukbazghi create ways to support community in #Portland the last five years. His "Simple X" series with Wilson Nitunga, MBA clearly ignited a fire. He and I spent many a late night on the phone as he plotted new ways to help Portland even when his job took him more than 5,000 miles away for a few years. His creation of the "Silicon Forest Tech Summit" is his next gift to our community. Being part of the of the event this past weekend was awesome. He and his team had to navigate some pretty big challenges to pull things off and boy did they! Thanks so much for and letting me join in on the fun and I can't wait to see what comes next. It’s been a pleasure seeing all the highlights from Saturday’s incredible Silicon Forest Tech Summit!?It was also a reminder of the importance of building connections and why creating spaces like this is crucial- it’s how we create thriving communities and opportunities. It was great getting to meet so many inspiring community and tech leaders, including (to name a few!): - Hamdi Ali, MBA about the Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund (PCEF) impactful contributions to the community and initiatives to foster a more climate-resilient Portland - Juan Manuel Muro, JR. and Dwindell Joseph Feeley with Free Geek, and how they are making a meaningful impact by equipping the community’s most vulnerable populations with essential digital literacy skills to help them succeed and thrive - Juan Barraza with Latino Founders, and the amazing work he is doing to bring more awareness and empower Latino entrepreneurs? - SHPE Oregon Professional and NSBE Portland Professionals representatives? - Rick Turoczy talking about the importance of highlighting and celebrating the remarkable work being accomplished within our own communities/that is happening in our own backyards A huge thank you (muchas gracias!!) to Tong Zhang, Ph.D. for the opportunity to attend, and a big shout out to Shepol Meman for bringing dreams to life—those trucks are amazing! Sharing my lightning talk “Getting Girls to Yes to STEM starts by saying YES to THEM” highlighted how we can can all Show Up, Show Out + Show Down for our girls. Creating psychologically safe environments that welcome girls to participate in STEM from adolescence to adulthood, starts with us. I said YES to STEM 20 years ago + my career path has been on fire ever since. ???? I may not have always felt safe, but I found pockets of safety + connected with the right folks in tech environments that allowed me to grow. STEM family, I encourage you to think about what’s getting in the way of you volunteering and/or mentoring a girl today. ?? ?? More of us need more of you.
