We’re excited to announce that Dr. Jesse Garn, PT, DPT, has joined the Steady State team! Jesse brings a wealth of experience as a physical therapist, accomplished athlete, and running coach, and will be helping to lead the growth of our virtual services to provide running-specific care to athletes across the country. About Jesse: Originally from Syracuse, NY, Jesse was a standout runner, earning New York State Champion status in the 1000m and becoming a 3-time NCAA Division I All-American in the 800m at Binghamton University. He competed in the 800m at the 2016 Olympic Trials, set personal bests of 1:45 (800m) and 3:57 (mile), and anchored the current Indoor 4x800m World Record relay team during his time as a sponsored athlete for Hoka and the NJNY Track Club. Jesse earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Upstate Medical University, where he became a certified running gait analyst and endurance running coach. As a co-author of “More Than the Achilles’ Heel: Management of a Complex Recreational Athlete,” published in Current Sports Medicine Reports, Jesse has contributed to advancing sports medicine research. Now that we’re in our 5th year as a company, it’s become crystal clear that relatively few physical therapists across the country are equipped to help runners return to their full potential. Runners often need their physical therapist to also be a run coach to fully recover from injury and regain peak performance. At Steady State, we’re focused on building a team of (in-person & virtual) running physical therapists who are also competitive runners and coaches themselves. Jesse embodies everything Steady State is about: deep passion for the sport of running, endless care for helping others get out of pain, and the drive to help them continue striving for their full potential. Jesse’s unique combination of clinical expertise, competitive running experience, and holistic approach to performance and resilience will make a significant impact for our clients. Please join us in welcoming Jesse to the team! Would you like to learn more about Steady State’s virtual services or connect with Jesse? Let us know in the comments or visit our website.

We recently had a great time at our annual Steady State staff retreat - locking ourselves in a cabin for 2 nights in the Maine woods! We always look forward to these couple of days each year, as it is a time for us all to have deep conversations around where we're headed in 2025. We met up at the cabin on night one, explored the home, and enjoyed the hot tub. We woke up early on day 1, focusing on reviewing each of our past year's achievements - before digging into an idea-generation session of how we can improve every aspect of both our client & employee experience. After a mid-day workout & run, and later an amazing homemade lasagna, we celebrated Dr. Mike's birthday (he had NEVER had lasagna before ?? ) with drinks & games. After breakfast on day 2 we set our 2025 goals, packed up, went for a fun wintery hike before capping off the retreat downtown in a local cafe. We love that we get to spend time together like this each year and we always leave with a new focus on where we're going and even more desire to keep building towards our long-term dream. Lot's of exciting things to come in 2025!

Oh, resting and clamshells didn't cure your running injury? It could be because there are SO many contributors to overuse injuries...hardly ever is an injury due to just one thing. Therefore the solution is typically multifactorial and more complex, especially if you're trying to solve all potential root causes to prevent future flare-ups or compensatory injuries. Which of the below have contributed to any of your previous injuries? ?? Also, 'Training Flexibility' does not mean how mobile you are, and 'Body Awareness' does not mean how well you can move. See explanation in the comments below ??

Relationship building is what life is all about right? Kelton & Ashten headed to Dallas this week for a business development conference. Talking with & learning from like-minded people & businesses is always so helpful for us. We come back from each event with new ideas, needed reminders, and strengthened relationships with some bad-ass people. To everyone who has supported us throughout our journey thus far, we appreciate you more than we can say. Your support gives us the ability to keep building our team & supporting our community. We have special visions for the future at Steady State. We cannot wait to show you what we've been building behind the scenes. We promise to never stop caring, innovating, and sharing what we learn with our community. Our sole purpose is to make as big of an impact on as many lives as possible. We want to show how the traditional healthcare system isn't meant for those with active goals and teach the things that are vital for health optimization. Stay tuned for some exciting news over the coming months!

A few weeks ago we were asked to speak at St. Joe's high school summer running camp about running injury prevention. Keeping high schoolers engaged after lunch with a potentially boring topic on a nice summer day can be tough, but we thought Kelton did a great job keeping it interactive! ?? The discussion centered around how 80% of running injuries are due to a mismatch between our desired activity level and our body's current capacity. We chatted about things that decrease our body's current capacity such as worse recovery (sleep, stress, fueling, hydration, etc), as well as ways that we can increase our capacity via strength training, solving mobility issues, training our power, and making smarter run training decisions. We see ourselves first and foremost as an education company, and we absolutely love any opportunity we have to teach runners how to become better, by achieving consistency via preventing injuries!

Our 3rd year of Co-Directing the Back Cove Backyard Ultra with Runaways/The Grind is complete! A backyard ultra (aka last person standing) is where you have to complete a 4.16 mile loop every hour on the hour, until you either drop out (DNF) or become the last person standing. This year's finisher Jason Bigonia went on to complete 27 laps (112 miles) over the 27 hours. When we initially thought of this idea with Mari Balow, we were pretty sure that the back cove would be the perfect location being one of the most iconic running trails in Maine. But we also hoped being right in the city it'd be a great way for all of Maine's running communities to come together for a weekend. We're so fortunate that this has been the case! It was so great to see support from so many running groups throughout Maine (including a squad - Move Free - from Acadia!) Can't wait for the 4th edition next year!

Cabot Trail Relay '24 Kelton was up in Nova Scotia this past weekend with the Maine-iacs - a group of Maine runners who have been making the 11 hour trek to Cape Breton for ~ 30 years. It's a time to reconnect with former teammates & long time friends while making new running friends & being able to have some fun friendly competition. While we beat the course record we set last year by ~ 6 minutes - we got beat by a team that improved by almost 40 minutes from last year. The competition was out to get us, but that always makes it more fun. Already looking forward to next year - where we plan on putting Maine back on top! ??
