?? Today, many organizations in the U.S. are wrapping up "Sunshine Week," a nonpartisan collaboration among groups in the journalism, civic, education, government and private sectors that shines a light on the importance of public records and open government. Across our States Newsroom outlets this week, we've published more than 20 news stories and commentary pieces that show why it's crucial to our democracy to maintain an open government. Of course, we don't restrict this kind of reporting and writing to one week, but we appreciate the collective effort to raise awareness about this essential role of journalism. ??? March is Women's History Month, so let's see what you know about women in journalism. Our first challenge: Can you guess today's featured journalist? ?? Here are some hints: 1?? ?She risked her life to expose the horrors of lynching in America, making her one of the first investigative journalists.??? ?2?? She was a co-founder of the NAACP and a relentless advocate for racial justice.??? 3?? ?She bought a newspaper and used it to fight back against injustice, even after her office was destroyed by a mob.???? 4?? ?She fought for women’s rights and clashed with suffragists over their failure to address racism.???? 5?? ?Her fearless reporting made her a target, but she never backed down from speaking the truth.??? ? Who is it? Add your guesses in the comments. We'll reveal the answer tomorrow. #FairFearlessFree

?? Now is the time to pay attention - not only to what's happening in Washington, but to what's happening in your own statehouse and local government. We at States Newsroom and other local journalism outlets are doing this work every day, for you. As journalist and media blogger Jennifer Schulze writes: "Local news is doing what it does best: build trust by reporting on stories local residents can verify with their own eyes. Recently, much of that reporting has focused on the local impact of the reckless actions of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Fired USDA?bird flu scientists. Shuttered?Head Start?programs. Angry voters?confronting GOP Congressmen about doge.?It’s all part of a monumental story playing out every day on?trusted?local news outlets from the TV newscasts in Chicago, to newspapers in Kansas and?digital news sites stretching from Nevada?to?New Hampshire." ??? Fed·er·al·ism (?fed(?)r??liz(?)m) - a mode of political organization that unites separate states or other polities within an overarching political system in a way that allows each to maintain its own integrity. (Britannica) Among other things ?? , Americans are getting a crash course right now in federalism, that crazy system laid out in the Constitution that allows our 50 states to each have policies and laws distinct from the federal government and from one another – and for the courts to determine which laws prevail when the federal government and state governments collide. It’s MESSY! And it’s why we support reporting teams in all 50 states. Our journalists are on the ground reporting daily on what is happening at the state government level. ?? Reporting the news, fearlessly and without bias, is our duty. Following the news closely and deciding how to act on it is yours. We’re all in this together. New immigration policies under the Trump administration are already prompting confusion, fear and response — from state officials, businesses and people in local communities — across the country. Covering those stories day after day requires reporters and editors on the ground who know and have the trust of those communities: our States Newsroom journalists. To cover the new laws and executive orders regarding border security, deportation and immigration status, all of our state editors are connecting with local sources and are reporting on immigration-related stories. Find all of our daily immigration coverage — from every state and D.C. — in one spot. And if there's a story you know about that we're not covering, let us know. #FairFearlessFree #LocalJournalism https://lnkd.in/egdBDJHd
