A big thank you to John O'Neill, Jennifer Jensen Gravel, and the rest of the NYC Department of City Planning (DCP) team for joining the SIEDC Board yesterday at our Annual Governance Meeting. They discussed the NYC Industrial Plan and gathered valuable feedback from business leaders on the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity proposal. We look forward to connecting our members with DCP for future zoning needs in the borough. Construction and distribution account for 70% of industrial jobs, and Staten Island is well-positioned to support this essential workforce. Whether you live, work, or operate in an industrial area, be sure to take the citywide industrial plan survey: https://lnkd.in/eUTtw_Rs

Nearly 900 Staten Islanders will receive improved heating services this winter as the New York Power Authority (NYPA)—an SIEDC member—teamed up with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) to complete a new energy-efficient heating system at NYCHA Berry Houses in Dongan Hills. “The heating improvements implemented at Berry Houses will ensure the reliable supply of heat and hot water to hundreds of New York public housing residents ahead of the upcoming winter season,” said New York Power Authority Trustee and President and CEO of the SIEDC Michael Cusick. “In addition to improving quality of life for NYCHA residents, the new heating system will reduce energy and maintenance costs for NYCHA and help shrink its carbon footprint, advancing the state and city’s ambitious climate goals.” With the new system, carbon emissions are expected to drop by more than 800 metric tons annually—the equivalent of taking nearly 180 cars off the road. On this #MemoryMonday, we're reflecting on last month's "Commissioner in Your Borough" forum at the Staten Island Zoo. New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, alongside Staten Island Borough Commissioner Roseann Caruana, met with SIEDC members and local business leaders on crucial local transportation and infrastructure issues. The forum encompassed several important subjects including prospective road improvements, flood mitigation, and traffic congestion prevention. The team also learned more about working closely with DOT to exchange information and provide input on behalf of SIEDC members. It was a pleasure to see our members Ed Burke (Staten Island Zoo), Luanne Sorrentino (St. George Theatre), and Vincent Innocente, MBA (Northfield Bank) join the impactful discussion.

Exciting news: SIEDC was recently awarded the Merchant Organizing Grant by the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) for two neighborhood merchants associations on Staten Island, Rosebank and Richmond Road. Last week, SIEDC Director of Projects Elizabeth M. Munafo and Project Manager Hanya Abdalla attended the FY25 Merchant Organizing Grantees Orientation at SBS headquarters. We even received a shoutout for last year's organizing efforts in Rosebank during the presentation! This is the second time we’ve received the grant for Rosebank, a rare accomplishment due to the tremendous success of our efforts with local merchants and the support of our elected officials. This is also the first time we’ve been awarded the grant for Richmond Road, marking an exciting new chapter for our organizing work there. We look forward to working closely with business owners and our public officials, including NYC Councilman David Carr, Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks, NYS Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, and NYS Senator Andrew Lanza as we continue to grow both commercial corridors.
