The Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation (ISN) prevents and rolls back the spread of WMD, delivery systems, and advanced conventional weapons capabilities; protects U.S. critical and emerging technology; and promotes the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, science, and technology. In close collaboration with other bureaus within the State Department, other U.S. agencies, and a diverse range of international and non-governmental partners, ISN further tracks, develops, and implements effective policy responses to proliferation threats and shapes the international security environment to prevent their recurrence.

ISN Assistant Secretary Eliot Kang visited the Colorado School of Mines Quantum Lab this week to learn how academia is fostering the next generation of scientists. He met with graduate students to see firsthand their research that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible. He also delivered the Grandey Lecture where he discussed why the use of nuclear energy for power generation is so critical to U.S. national security and geopolitical interests. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies can be powerful tools for expanding knowledge, increasing prosperity and productivity, and addressing global challenges. On the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, the United States convened U.S. industry, partner governments, and other stakeholders for an event on advancing sustainable development through safe, secure, and trustworthy AI.?? ? We believe the benefits of this emerging technology should be shared equitably across the globe, which is why we are taking action to develop and deploy advanced AI systems to help address society’s greatest challenges. We will bring AI to the developing world by helping partners build AI talent, access compute for AI applications, and ensure AI systems meet their particular needs.??? ? During the event, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a new partnership between the United States and Amazon, Anthropic, IBM, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and OpenAI to harness the rapid advancement of AI to enable sustainable development globally. The United States intends to provide approximately $33 million to support this goal. ? The United States is also developing comprehensive global strategies that guide the safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of AI through the release of the AI in Global Development Playbook and the Global AI Research Agenda (GAIRA).? ? AI applications have the potential to improve many aspects of citizens’ lives; from food security, health applications, good governance and democratic consolidation, to natural disaster preparedness and prevention.
