This morning, the U.S. Department of State's Bureau for Global Health Security and Diplomacy hosted a series of meetings between U.S. government leaders, the AU Permanent Representative Mission to the United States, and the Africa CDC, including Director General, Dr. Jean Kaseya. Our discussions focused on our shared commitment to advancing global health security and strengthening our partnerships. By working together, we can improve global health security because a health threat anywhere is a threat everywhere. Our collaborative efforts to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats make us safer. Today's meeting highlighted the importance of effective outbreak responses, biosafety, biosecurity, and leveraging biotechnology and innovation to enhance health, safety, and prosperity, while noting the critical role played by national investments in domestic and regional health security, public-private partnerships, and other innovative approaches.? We look forward to continuing our work with Africa CDC to build on the U.S.-AU Memorandum of Cooperation to Promote Public Health Partnership, to achieve our common public health objectives. The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) draft 2025 Country/Regional Operational Plan (COP/ROP) guidance has been released for public feedback by January 17. After the document is finalized following the public feedback period, it will guide PEPFAR’s strategic direction for its pivotal 2025 planning cycle. Today, the U.S. government's donated doses of #mpox vaccines arrived in #Nigeria. At the UN General Assembly in September, President Biden announced that the United States is prepared to commit at least $500 million and to donate up to one million doses of mpox vaccines to support African countries in preventing and responding to this outbreak. The United States is delivering on that commitment, the first 300,000 pledged vaccines already making their way to countries and the rest will be ready soon for countries to request. ? GHSD has played a key coordinating role in the USG's mpox response and continues to work with the interagency towards strengthening health systems and surveillance, and reducing transmission. ? Today, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) led by GHSD, the The Global Fund, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a coordinated effort that will rapidly provide affordable and equitable access to twice-yearly injectable lenacapavir for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), contingent upon regulatory approval from FDA, relevant national pharmaceutical regulators, and a recommendation from the World Health Organization. The journal Science named lenacapavir the 2024 Breakthrough of the Year after late-stage trials showed great potential for preventing new HIV infections and accelerating progress toward ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.? HIV prevention options are particularly important for populations who face an increased vulnerability to HIV infection. GHSD supports innovative approaches for HIV prevention and treatment. This week, UNAIDS held its 55th meeting of its Programme Coordinating Board (PCB), which includes representatives of 22 governments from all geographic regions, the UNAIDS Cosponsors, and five representatives of non-governmental organizations, including associations of people living with #HIV.
