The rare metals in your phone rely on global supply chains. Disruptions caused by shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic revealed how important it is that we advance resilient supply chains. Addressing this issue is part of our Economic Diplomacy, led by my team, the bureaus and offices of the U.S. Department of State’s “E” Under Secretariat. Economic Diplomacy plays a critical role in accomplishing our top foreign policy priorities, including: ?? State is an essential gateway for American businesses operating overseas. Through our Direct Line program, hundreds of U.S. companies have connected to our ambassadors and experts on the ground in more than 190 countries to gain critical market insights. ?? Foreign investment also drives growth in the U.S. and addresses global challenges. Korean solar cell manufacturers invested more than $2.5B to build factories in Georgia that are projected to result in 2,000 green jobs. ?? For global supply chains in critical minerals essential to the energy transition, we want to avoid dependence on a single source. The U.S. launched a Minerals Security Partnership (or #MSP) with 14 countries, the EU, and the private sector to build reliable supply chains. ?? Addressing the climate crisis not only helps the planet, but also improves the economic security of Americans and people around the world. As part of U.S. efforts, we negotiated the first United Nations Global Stocktake and secured emissions targets in aviation and shipping sectors. We are ensuring Americans’ economic security through our work with allies and partners on these and other critical issues. ———————————————————————— ?? Why shouldn’t we involve 51% of the world’s population in helping us all grow and prosper? Yesterday was Women’s Entrepreneurship Day. Involving women – and empowering them to start their own businesses if they want – helps us all. #GEW2024 and #WomensEntrepreneurshipDay are great reminders that making it easier to start a business ignites broad-based growth. When women are empowered, we all benefit.

Congratulations to the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES) on 50 years! In my role overseeing economic growth, energy, and the environment at the U.S. Department of State, I see firsthand how economic growth and environmental stewardship are intertwined. For instance, illegal logging and associated trade cost the U.S. market an estimated $500 million to $1 billion annually. And sustainably managed fisheries support over 2 million U.S. jobs and add almost $470 billion to the U.S. economy. Conserving and protecting our natural resources also protects our economies. Celebrating the achievements of OES highlights the pivotal role that NGOs and the private sector play in our mission. Their innovative solutions and dedicated efforts are critical in combating environmental challenges like plastic pollution and biodiversity loss. Together, we’re driving progress toward a more sustainable future. ???? #OESat50
Honored to celebrate 50 years of OES with The ICCF Group and Congressional leaders! As we mark this anniversary, it is a great time to celebrate what we’ve accomplished and to look toward our future. I am extremely proud of our dedicated team of experts, diplomats, and negotiators, who are actively engaged in hundreds of international agreements, advocating for U.S. interests and shaping global environmental policies. Recent milestones include the Artemis Accords signatories, ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, and our ongoing efforts to tackle illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Looking ahead, we will continue to protect nature and biodiversity, develop the sustainable blue economy, and establish norms for responsible space exploration. As we celebrate 50 years of OES, we are more determined than ever to advance these goals and secure a sustainable future for the American people and our planet. Here’s to the next 50 years of impactful leadership and collaboration! -JRL

Arctic communities are already facing severe impacts from climate change, and it will take a sustained effort from the international community to mitigate future risks. The Greenland Climate and Research Centre (GCRC) focuses on the impact of climate change on artic communities and ecosystems. ????????? It was a pleasure visiting GCRC in Nuuk to discuss how their research program informs local, regional, and international policy and how our scientific communities can contribute positively to Arctic climate research. Especially enjoyed meeting with their Director, Josephine Nymand! ????????
