Damn. Our first cancellation of 2025 came in this week, a stark contrast to 2024 when we lost only one customer. My initial reaction? Wounded pride. We've been proud of our customer retention rates and "all in" approach to customer success. Was this karma for our boasting? Then I learned the details. This small business is facing a difficult situation - closing locations, reducing staff, and cutting costs. My perspective shifted immediately. What I initially saw only as a business metric has real human impact for them. People are losing jobs. People at all levels of that business must be dealing with stress, anxiety, and concern for what is next. No one wanted this outcome. It's a humbling reminder that most business metrics have people behind them. In this case, there are real people facing real challenges. Our response? We're going to assist this customer and live out our values until the end. Being human and caring for others is more important and meaningful long-term than any business metric we'll eventually forget. This experience reinforces a crucial lesson: while metrics are important in business, they should never overshadow our ability to recognize and respond to the human element in difficult situations. I'm grateful for this perspective check. It's easy to get caught up in numbers and forget the lives they represent. As leaders, we must remember to balance our focus on business performance with empathy and understanding for the people behind those figures. Moving forward, let's strive to maintain this human-centric approach in all our interactions, both in times of success and in moments of challenge.
