Nonprofit seeking to revolutionize education by integrating social and environmental justice into classrooms in NY & TX.

关于我们

OUR MISSION & VALUES: Start: Empowerment is a BIPOC-led social and environmental justice education non-profit working with youth, educators, activists, and community members to implement a justice-focused education and programming in schools and community spaces. Our mission is to use education as a tool to achieve social-environmental justice and liberation for all. OUR BEGINNING: After realizing the lack of environmental justice education available to students in NYC both inside and outside the classroom in the fall of 2019, S:E was born to create justice-oriented curriculums that could be easily accessible and infused into pre-existing classroom environments and subject areas. We thought it was extremely important that students are aware of the environmental racism present in this country, how the climate crisis disproportionately impacts the Global South, and solutions going forward. Since our beginning, we have been recognized by actress Regina Hall to the National Geographic Foundation and worked with multiple entities such as the (public) High School for Teaching and Professions, the Horace Mann (private) School, Summer on a Hill, New York University's (NYU) 'College & Career Lab' and 'Office of Sustainability,' and the NYC Department of Education's Office of Sustainability. Join us! OUR TEAM: This organization was proudly founded by 2 BIPOC womxn who are both graduates of NYU. HOW YOU CAN HELP! Join us to champion transformative K–12 classrooms by: ? Understanding that #education has always been one of the many tools used to break cycles of #injustice by those who came before us, we help #educators translate their desire to incorporate #environmental (and social) #justice-oriented concepts into actionable teaching plans to radically transform their #classrooms and #curricula. In addition, we hope to turn classrooms into spaces where students can learn about systems of oppression and take meaningful action towards #liberation outside the classroom as well. Reaching over 200 students across 4 separate programs in our first year, we have actively bridged the gap between education and action through the funding of 2 hyperlocal #community #organizing projects and the provision of 2 fully integratabtle and free modularized curriculums. So, how do we tie in with the overarching #environmentaljustice #movement? See for yourself! ???? (Like, comment, and subscribe on YouTube here: https://lnkd.in/gXWNxsy)

Creating a more equitable and just education system and environment via public policy | North American Assoc of Enviro Educators 30 Under 30 ‘24

? I DID A THING!! ? Yesterday, I published my FIRST article with Next100 exploring the disconnect between the environmental and climate education provided nowadays and the urgent needs of our changing world. In a world where climate change is an everyday reality, our educational systems need urgent updates to reflect this, especially for those already facing environmental racism. How can we better prepare our youth for the realities they'll inherit? That’s why we must arm our youth, particularly in marginalized communities, with the knowledge to fight for their future. ???? Discover how Critical Climate Change Education (CCCE) can transform lives and empower the next generation. https://lnkd.in/dmHxqYSE ?? Special shoutout to Daniella Sánchez Barillas for allowing me to uplift your incredible story, Zenobia StClair for the beautiful photo illustrations, the Start:Empowerment team for creating the space to explore and experiment, and Climate and Resilience Education Task Force for being a partner in this policy work. #CriticalClimateChangeEducation #CCCE #ClimateChange #EducationReform #SustainableFuture #ClimateAction #ClimateEducation #EnvironmentalJustice
